Not to be a pain here, but…
Is there any way to turn them off by default? 
You can change your default under “profile.” Switch “Always notify me of replies:” to “No.”
For any given topic, there’s always a link at the bottom of the page to either “start” or “stop” watching the thread, and when you post, there is check box just above the submit button that can turn on/off email notification.
