Hi,
I am in the process of perfecting my understanding of Attic Greek.
I have only heard great things about this board so pretty excited.
Currently I am working on a translation of Thucydides book 3.

I mainly translate on my commute to and from work, or at home when my cats leaving me alone.
I am not terrible in ancient Greek and I am probably technically not really a beginner but I have let it lapse over the last decade, and I am working on getting back into it. I used to be okay and I really miss the intellectualism of translating ancient authors in their context.

I have spent much time in Greece itself, looking at ancient sites, particularly Doric temples. I am a avid photographer and my absolute favorite temple is the Temple of Poseidon at Sounio. I have seen it two or three times. Fascinating structure.

Luckily my wife is Greek so I had have lots of opportunities to visit the country. We were married near Corinth because her father comes from a small village up in the mountains located near the archaeological site of Pheneos (mentioned in Homer’s catalog of ships). She partially grew up in Athens near Dexameni, where there is a Roman reservoir built by Hadrian. Part of it still stands just below an outside movie theatre.

As a kid, my wife use to play in front of it, and as adults we often visit to see the next generation of kids play in the same area. Great restaurant leading down to the reservoir with chairs and tables on both sides of the street, set out on declining steps.

Anyway, I digress …

Thank you one and all!

Welcome to Texkit!

Thanks!!

Hi, Simon, nice to meet you! It should be spectacular to spend childhood in such a place and play by the side of Greek and Roman antiquities. Did your wife study ancient Greek at school? What is her attitude to it? Kind regards to you both and to the cats.

Welcome here! I’m jealous of all the time you’ve spent in Greece. I spent a month in Athens in 2022 and absolutely loved it (what a wonderful city) but I haven’t seen the rest of the country. Someday!
