My Introduction As a New Member

Greetings from Thailand!

Hi, my name is Kanpanat. You can call me by my nickname “Farn”, which is pronounced as /Fa:n/. I’m a first year English student (BA) who studies in Thai university.

Before I explain more about myself, I would like to say that I am truly sorry if my writing skill may seem rude, not good, or confusing. I am still working on the process of self-improving and hope you understand it.

When I was young, I was once deeply obsessed with Greek mythology. Tales about all of the gods and goddesses really attractive for me. However, I had never ever think it could become an occupation one day because there are not a lot of chances of studies about ancients much in my country. So I decided to study in English major, which I also enjoy it.

Therefore, I joined this society to gain more Classics knowledge of mine. I want to learn lots of Ancient history, language, philosophy, and literature when I have free time after college classes. I also joined the Facebook group to learn Ancient Greek, asking for advices that I should learn Ancient Greek or Modern Greek first.(Most of them said AG).

Recently, I have bought the Iliad and Apology by Plato, which I will start read them soon.

So If you have any suggestions for a new like me, please type down here. Also, nice to meet you all!!!

Cannot wait to search for tons of information and tips.

Best,
Farn

Hi Farn,

Welcome! It’s exciting to read your introduction post. I’m a fellow learner of Ancient Greek. I started exactly a year ago (November 29th, 2020  ). I really believe in being exposed to original texts as early as you can. However, you might want to go through a beginner textbook at the same time. Do you have any preference of dialects (Homeric, Attic, Koine, etc.)? For example, I’ve been using Reading Greek (JACT), which teaches you Attic Greek and places an emphasis on introducing you to the “classical period” of Ancient Greek literature (c.5th and 4th centuries BCE), using adapted original texts as their reading materials. I’m sure you won’t find a lack of recommendations for learning resources on this website, once you’ve decided what you prefer.

Dear Enosh,

Nice to meet you! I feel so great to be welcomed by your warm message. Thank you so much. Anyway, to answer your question, I haven’t had a preferable dialects yet. Maybe Homeric, I’m not sure. I will search for further information from this website soon. Oh I also heard that the book Reading Greek is really great! I should get one since you confirmed that rumor for me haha. And thank to your suggest that I should start reading in Ancient Greek as soon as possible, I will try hard!

My plan is I am going to start from learning all of them in Thai, then in English, and in Ancient Greek since I sometimes still struggle with English

Thank you again for sharing a nice message with me. Have a nice one!

Farn
