More Hansen + Quinn questions..

Just making sure I understand what’s going on.

H+Q Unit 4 English to Greek exercises:

  1. If the poet writes a good book about battle, the young men will dissolve the peace.

ἐὰν ὁ ποιητὴς ἀγαθὸν βιβλίον περὶ τῆς μάχης γραψῃ, οἱ νεανίαι τὴν εἰρηνην λύσουσιν.

  1. If you (pl.) should sacrifice animals to the gods, we would stop the war.

εἰ ζῷα τοῖς θεοῖς θύαιτε, τὸν πόλεμον παύσαιμεν.

  1. If I had guarded the island, you would have guarded the bridge.

εἰ τὴν νῆσον φύλαξα, τὴν γέφυραν φύλαξας.

  1. The citizens refused to send animals in order that the soldiers on the island might sacrifice to the gods.

οἱ πολῖται ζῷα ἐπέμψαι οὐκ ἠθέλεον ἵνα οἱ ἐν τῇ νήσῳ στρατιῶται τᾶς θεοῖς θύσαιεν.

The soul of the unjust man is not worthy of the prize.

ἡ τοῦ ἀδίκου ἀνθρώπου ψυχὴ οὐ τοῦ ἄθλου ἀξία.

You did a very good job. :slight_smile:

Some comments :

  • γράψῃ : right, but the compound verb συγγράψῃ would perhaps be better
  • speaking of « battle » in general, περὶ μάχης without an article would be more natural
  • θύσαιτε with a sigma is the aorist optative active (you wrote correctly θύσαιεν in # 4)
  • You forgot augments : ἐφύλαξα, ἐφύλαξας
  • You forgot to remove an augment :stuck_out_tongue: : πέμψαι, or is it ἐκπέμψαι « send away » ?
  • It is ἐθέλω, not –έω, thus the imperfect should be ἤθελον : the thematic vowel is E or O, not both
  • ταῖς θεοῖς would mean « to the goddesses »

EDIT : in #2 and 3, don’t forget to add an A)/N with PAU/SAIMEN and E)FU/LACAS
