Hello,
I am trying to locate the source/correct rendering of the following Greek snippet:
https://play.google.com/books/reader?id=jnZE_zao8_EC&hl=en&hl=en&pg=GBS.PA243
My attempt to render is
The other word ὕλη = “woods” appears related to Silvanus tutelary deity of woods and uncultivated lands.
Appreciate any help.
All the Best,
David
All,
Looking through Scaife seems first part is Πότερον ἐκ | ἐϰ. Wondering is next fragment “τὶ καὶ ἀπλούν” is correct.
All the Best,
David
I make it out as (with some obviously bad accents):
TLG has it as GALENUS, In Hippocratis de natura hominis librum commentarii iii. 15.6
I read it as (possibly with errors): Whether it is one and unvarying, from which we attempt to find the nature, or assembled from some unvarying things prior to it, such as what those, following the ancients themselves, were accustomed to call “elements”.
Yes,
Thank you for the information. Scaife has it in Galen, searched “πότερον ἕν τι καὶ ἁπλοῦν” listed in Galen, In Hippocratis De natura hominis, Book 1 Chapter prooemium (1.prooemium) ed.
All the Best,
David
