Learning Latin the Ancient Way: Latin Textbooks from the Anc

It’s not only Eleanor Dickey fans who will appreciate this book. She has done a great amount of work on teaching texts from ancient times and has collected some of them, along with English translations and some Greek renderings (since they were designed to teach Latin to Greek speakers) in this book. Not only is this of great interest to those of us who teach Latin, but the texts are a goldmine of information on daily life current to the production of the texts, and especially how Latin would be used by the homines in via. Unlike Ancient Greek, we have precious little from ancient times witnessing to how Latin was actually spoken in non-literary contexts, graffiti, occasional finds such as the Vindolanda fragments, but here is a wealth of information. She also includes footnotes to more scholarly treatments of these texts, her own and others. Enjoy!
