hlawson38 asked for references to online readings on Latin verse. I performed a search for “Latin meter”, but all I found were sites that do nothing more than lay out the rules of scansion. There is, however, a book that goes into more depth on the dynamics of Latin verse beyond a mere regurgitation of the basic elements of scansion, as well as many other aspects of literary Latin in the classical period. Unfortunately, it’s currently out of print, but used copies are available at reasonable cost. The book in question is Golden Latin Artistry by L.P. Wilkinson. Cambridge University Press has reprinted a number of his books; maybe they will reprint this one, too.
Yes, that’s a stimulating read.
Another one well worth getting hold of is Marouzeau’s Traité de Stylistique Latine, originally published in 1935 by Société d’Édition “Les Belles Lettres”. Secondhand copies are available for modest sums.
