Latin music

For immersion purposes, I would find it both fun and entertaining to listen to music in latin — is there any? Christian psalms and all, but, a day with Dies Iræ all long would give me nightmares when thinking about what the lyrics actually mean; also, it is often very hard to grasp what words are actually sung in many of these psalms, that, or the same short sentence is sung repetitively for a long while (I’m thinking about the popular rendering of Ave Maria, where half the song is ‹Ave maria gratia plena› dragged out and repeated).

Cheers ~

I’ve been on the search for the same thing a year ago. Depending how hard you looked, I may not be of much help.

Of course, there’s always Adeste Fideles. Even though I’m nonreligious, I don’t find it too bad to listen to.

Here is a fandub of a Disney song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Wbv6ly9kXM

Wish more of stuff like that is made. Those Disney songs were fun.

Someone made a set of lyrics to sing along with the Superman theme. Easy enough to Google it.

Ode to Joy has a set of Latin lyrics, but I’ve never been impressed with it; and the meaning is completely different from the original German.

There’s a PS2 game called Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. One of the main songs, “Unsung War” is in Latin, but it’s in that church Latin choirs with repeating lyrics that you can hardly hear.

Maybe not what you’re looking for in terms of content, but it is Latin. The good folks at Bolchazy-Carducci have translated some children’s songs into Latin and made them available for download.

Tunberg and Minkova have also translated several Mother Goose rhymes into Latin and packaged it with a CD.

Of course, given that you may be Swedish by culture you may not be familiar with some of these. Or I could be completely wrong.

Oh, and if you’re a Black Sabbath fan:

One of the reasons I began to study Latin was in order to understand Bach. With the liner notes you usually get the lyrics. Have fun.

Something like this perhaps? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Piae-Cantiones-Latin-Mediaeval-Finland/dp/B00000DAJD/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1313603733&sr=1-1

Reminds me of my graduation at Glasgow University many moons ago.
