Since someone thought a good jokes thread was appropriate here, I’ll extend the thread a bit and ask if anyone knows any good limericks or other funny poems in Latin. I’m familiar with Grant Legman’s books on limericks in which he includes such prosodic wonders as “Nantucketensis ridebat…” and a few others. Thomas Campion wrote an interesting Latin ode to his penis in which he lamented his lack of “exercise” of it when he was younger: he reasoned that since all other muscles grew according to their exercise perhaps he ought to have “exercised” it more strenuously. Of course there’s Fracastorius’s poem on the origins of syphilis, but that one’s not intentionally humorous, and I’m sure we can all adduce our favorite scurrilous passages out of Plautus, Catullus, or Martial. So, does anyone have any favorite funny Latin poems they’d like to share ? (I’d post the entire limerick about the man from Nantucket, but I don’t want to be offensive here).
