I’m an university student in Argentina. I tried learning a little latin some years ago (from textkit), but because of the lack of time, I couldn’t continue with it. Last year I began a modern Greek class. (Is ancient Greek similar to modern Greek?). I hope some day I can re take Latin… but well, university is first… Well, at least (as I’m studying Law) I learn some little things in latin: in dubio pro reo, ad solemnitatem, ad probationem, homo hominis lupus (is that correct?)
If you know both, you can see that these are two states of the same language, but knowing the one doesn’t help so much in understanding the other.
For example, modern ψάρι “fish” comes from ancient ὀψάριον that means “made dish eaten with bread and wine”, which was normally… fish.
homo hominis lupus (is that correct?)
Correct except for a little superfluous “s” : homo homini lupus
Hominis would be a singular genitive as in Bonum vinum laetificat cor hominis “Good wine rejoices man’s heart.”
I wish I had some exposure to modern Greek. It’s only a couple of Mouskouri CD’s, her Greek songs. And that’s whence I got the impression Modern Greek is charming.
Hm, “τις καλύτερες ευχές μου” would work. If what you said would be used, it would probably be spelled “πολυχρονιά” (“πολυχρόνια” sounds like two words, “πολύ χρόνια”, which means “many years”, really). You will hear “καλή χρονιά” often when people salute you for having a birthday or when they don’t see you for a long time.
We learned that for birthdays or any festive occasion, they say (I don’t know how to use the greek symbols, so I write the phonetics) “jronia pollá”.
Our teacher told us about the ancient word of psári (fish).
The good thing about modern Greek is that you can listen to it: in music (at home we have the Irene Papas “Odes” CD), radios in the internet, and during the Olympics! (I could review the nationalities: “apó tin elláda” and the numbers, especially during tennis matches: trianta - saranda).
I want to study Ancient Greek too, but fist I’ll finish the modern Greek course (or my there will be a huge mess in my head!!).
