well at school, i am currently studying oxford latin course part 3. and just did the set translations in there. Just hoping for some adjustments, for it isn’t so… correct. and some bits i just am lost about.
Quintus parentes suos quaerit
Quintus iter, quod decem abhinc annons cum patre tan celeriter fecerat, iam lentissime faciebat.in onibus vicis diu manebat ut parentes quaereret. Interdun Venusinis in via occurrit quoes anxiw rogabat mum parents suos vidissent, sed nemo ei dicere poterat ubi eos inventurus esset.
Cum Capuam accederet, veteri amico occurrit; Gaius, quocum ad ludum Flavii ibat, plaustrum ducebat quod trahebant duo boves; plenum erat bonis omnis modi, super quae sedebant Gaii uxor duoque parvi pueri,
Translation
Quintus was making a very long journey now, which he had quickly made with his father 10years ago. He remained in all the villages for a long time in order to find his parents. From time to time he ran into people of Venusia to whom he anxiously asked whether they had seen his parents, but no one was able to tell him where he was going to find them.
When he arrived at Capua, he met an old friend; Gaius, with whom he went to the School of Flavius, he was leading a wagon that two oxen were dragging; he had many goods of every kind, above sat Gaius’ wife and two small boys.
Yeh, that was the shorter one… with two paragraphs, me other one contains 3…
Quintus Athenas fugit (Lines 20 – 36)
Sole oriente surrexit, Athenas profecturus; comites aspexit adhuc dormientes. Paulum dubitavit, deinde solus profectus est. viginti dies iter laboriosum faciebat; interdiu dormiebat in silvis celatus, ne ad hostibus caperetur. Noctu procedebat per vias desertas. Aliquando rusticis occurrebat, qui plerumque eum comiter accipiebant cibumque dederunt.
Tandem, Athenas procul conspexit. Sole occidete urbem ingresses, ad aedes Theomnesti festinabit ianuamque pulsavit. Theomnestus isnua aperta Quintum vix agnovit sed vultu eius propius aspecto ‘di immortals,’ inquit, ‘num Quintum video? Quid passus es? Intra celeriter.’ Quintus ingressus omnia ei narravit. Ille ‘Quinte, ieiunus es. Primum cena, deinde I cubitum. Cras cogitemus quid facere debeas.’
Quintus diu dormiebat. Meridie Theomnestu eum excitavit et ‘age, Quinte,’ inquit, ‘non potes in urbe manere ne Antonii milites te capiant. Quid facturus es?’ Quintus nihil cupiebat nisi domum redire. Ad portum igitur profecti sunt ut navem quaererent quae ad Italiam discessure erat.
Translation
The sun was rising, he was about to set out for Athens, he looked at his comrades still sleeping. He hesitated a bit; then he set out alone. He made a 20-day laborious journey; in the daytime he was sleeping in the woods, hidden in order not to be captured by his enemies. By night, he was walking through the deserted streets. Sometimes he would meet countrymen, who usually received him in a friendly way and gave him food.
At least, he caught sight of Athens far off. The sun set as he entered the city, he hurried to Theomnestus’ building and knocked on the door. Theomnestus opened the door and barely recognised Quintus but looked at him closely (vultu?). He said, “Oh my God, is it Quintus I see? Why are you suffering? Enter quickly.’ Quintus entered and told him everything. Theomnestus said, ‘Quintus, you are starving. First dine, then go to bed. Tomorrow we will consider what you ought to do.’
Quintus slept for a long time. At midday Theomnestus woke him up and said, ‘Go, Quintus, you are not able to remain in the city in order not to be captured by Antony’s soldiers. What are you going to do?’ Quintus wanted nothing but to return home. And so, they set out to the port in order to find a ship that was about to leave for Italy.
Please point out any mistake and tell me sections in which better english may be applied.
