Hello.
I’m James and I’m excited and intimated to join this community.
I’m a scientist (biotech) and teacher by profession. A lifelong interest in the so-called great books brought me to the University of Chicago’s Basic Program in Liberal Studies, where I’m in the second of the program’s four years. I’ve read Homer in translation before but in addition to re-reading Iliad for the program’s fall quarter, I’m taking the program’s Basic Homeric Greek course.
I’ve never learned a language (and I’m a bit upset that my high school and university didn’t insist) so coming to grips with the ways of a highly inflected language is taking me a while but I’m starting to feel some hope.
I look forward to learning from the discussions in this community and to any guidance you all might be inclined to provide as I come up against questions I can’t resolve on my own.
