I recently came across a German band who sings in both German and Latin combined - this may be commonplace among other nationalities, I don’t know, but I’ve certainly never heard of it before. They are called “E Nomine”, which is obviously a twist on the Latin “In Nomine”, as the article above says. Admittedly there is quite a lot more German than there is Latin in their songs, as German is their native language, but anyone who is learning German as well as Latin may benefit from it. Indeed, someone who just likes hearing a little Latin may just benefit just by enjoying it. Judging by the few songs I’ve heard from them, the amount of Latin in the songs varies enormously; anywhere from just one line in “Vater Unser” - “Our Father”, to one verse and the chorus in “Schwarze Sonne”. Personally, I find this very useful from a Latin point of view, even if the song I’m listening to only contains ten or so words of Latin, as my Latin is fairly basic, and hearing the words spoken by someone other than myself helps the words to stick in my memory.
You can find most of their songs on youtube, as I mentioned in passing above. So far my favourite two in terms of Latin content are “Schwarze Sonne” and “Das Omen”. Unfortunately, I haven’t listened to enough to give any more information yet. I hope this has been helpful to at least one person - I realise Latin and German is a very strange combination, but I rather like it, and I can’t be completely unique, can I?
Furthering the topic of listening to Latin, is there anywhere other than youtube that you can do this? I listen to “Pater Noster” and “Credo” in Latin on youtube, although I don’t really know of anything else. If there are any particularly obvious sources, then it’d be nice to hear about them.
