Introduction

Hello everyone, My name is Elian, I’m a musician (studying Composing and Guitar),
I started studying Latin after trying to unsuccessfully learn other languages without a method,
My current goal is learning Latin to be able to read, understand and use Fux’s “Gradus ad Parnassus”
(A book on 17th counterpoint), my secondary goal is to be able to read Seneca’s letters, and to have
an advantage learning romance languages.

So far Latin has helped me to better understand the syntax of my native language (Spanish).

I’m using Downling method of repeating the declinations, combining it the book “Beginner’s
Latin Book” by Collar and Daniell, and also trying to create phrases.

Have a good day.

Welcome to Textkit!

Hi AA ,

I too learnt and am continuing to learn Latin to help with Romance languages. I learnt Latin and French at school and have come back to both recently as well as picking up Italian and having a solid grounding in Latin is really helpful

I am using Reading Latin by Jones and Sidwell if you have heard of that?

Bona Fortuna with your studies. There is a ton of great information on Textkit which will be beneficial to your journey.

Cheers.

Hello Mr. Villanelle, I haven’t heard of Jones and Sidwell “Reading Latin”, going to check that book later, Is it good? BONA FORTVNA with your studies as well

Have a good day.

Hi AA,

Yes Reading Latin by Jones and Sidwell is very good and has excellent explanations of grammar along with adapted translations so you get straight into working on classical works from the start albeit adapted versions of them. Two other members on the Forum Enosh and Nautius Maximus are using it too and they both think it’s good.

If you end up getting let me know here and we can swap notes!

Cheers.
