At university I studied physics and mathematics, but I did Latin in high school in Italy over 25 years ago before moving to the UK. I can’t say I ever knew it well, since even back then the teaching standards in this subject left a lot to be desired. However I never completely forgot it, and recently found out I could understand most articles on the Latin Wikipedia without much trouble, and even spot a few mistakes now and then.

I have been working my way through Wheelock’s Latin (7th ed.), probably at a faster pace than intended, and I recently started using Latin: An Intensive Course as well. Of course I am helped by the fact that I already studied this stuff a long time ago, and from being a native speaker of Italian.

For a long time I have wanted to study classical Greek as well, however for now I am only focusing on Latin.

Thanks, well spotted about my username, I did indeed choose it after Murray :slight_smile:. By the way, what was it like for you to study Latin in an Italian secondary school? I attended a “liceo scientifico” between 1986 and 1991, and we only did translations from Latin into Italian (usually from texts by Cicero or Caesar). However, when my father went to school back in the 1950’s, they did translations both ways. He also started Latin well before secondary school, and still remembers some to this day.

I attend a “liceo scientifico” (Roiti, Ferrara) from 1982 to 1987 and we did translations both ways. But in the last year it was all from Latin. I don’t know if it was a general switch for the whole country or only because it was the last year.
