Hello!

Good morning, I just wished to introduce myself.

My name is Jay, and I’m a recently-retired software engineer and a new student of ancient Greek. Classical philosophy is a deep interest of mine, particularly the late Platonist end of things (esp. Plotinus and Porphyry); this is because I’ve had a lot of mystical experiences and they do the best job of anyone I’ve seen of explaining those experiences. (I got into it originally after discovering that Socrates had experiences very similar to my own) Now that I finally have some time to study, it seemed appropriate to start learning the language it was all written in, all the moreso because there are quite a few things I’d like to read which have never been translated (like Johannes Stobaeus’s Anthology) or which are untranslatable (like the hymns of Orpheus, Porphyry, or Proclus)! I figure it’ll be a long while before I can get that far, but I like myths and fables and so there’s no shortage of “easier” material to get on with in the meantime.

I’ve been studying Greek on my own for the last four months or so. I started with William Linney’s Getting Started with Ancient Greek, and am now continuing on with C. W. E. Peckett’s and A. R. Munday’s Thrasymachus. I’m finding this congenial so far, but I suppose it’s no surprise that I have a bunch of questions as I go through. I am hoping to be able to ask those questions here and speed my progress a bit.

So, thank you for providing this resource, and I hope to repay the favor and be able to answer questions of my own once I have some experience under my belt!
