Hello from an Ex Pat

Hello everyone,

I’m a senior, living in New England, USA, who studied Latin and Greek in the UK in the early 1950’s. I discovered Textkit when I was on a search for the textbook we used back then. I thought it was a lost cause, but have since discovered it was likely The Approach to Latin, originally published in 1938 but with many new editions since. I’m currently checking out these newer editions to see if they bear any resemblance to the one I remember. My plan is to brush up on my very rusty Classical Latin.

I’ve already dipped into some of the forums and was happy to find there is still so much interest in this ancient language.

Welcome to Textkit! Happy New Year!

Hello Merrie! I see we’re starting here at the same time. I’m interested in the way Latin and Greek were taught at British schools in the past. I’ve read some suggestions that they were abandoned because they were seen as too difficult. Now, when Latin is taught, it’s via the Cambridge Latin Course, which is incredibly simplistic. It seems to me that we’ve gone backwards in these matters since the 50s.

I look forward to reading your posts.
