Greetings!

My name is Topher, I have some college courses in Ancient Greek under my belt but not nearly enough mastery as I would like to have.

I have two questions as I am getting a tattoo and would like the exact spelling of these translations:

For Latin I would like to know what “Church of Death” looks like.

For Ancient Greek I would like to know what “Temple of Wisdom” looks like, thanks.

Welcome to textkit!

FY(kindly)I, the Greeks (and Romans, too?) regarded tattooing in the same manner as the (asinine) Hebraic practice of circumcision: with great contempt. That is why tattooing was reserved for the branding of slaves, criminals, and prisoners of war.

Look, it’s your body AND it’s none of my business. However, if you do decide to “brand” yourself, make sure you pick colours – avoid green! – that can be easily erased should you change your mind later on.

If you decide not to, you can do the truly Greek thing: Get yourself some tasty, non-toxic body paints; get your mate (highly recommended). Need I say more? :sunglasses: :arrow_right:  :arrow_right:

Um, thanks, I have seven tattoos and do not regret any of them and have bold use of color, and just because I enjoy the Ancient Greek (and Roman) culture does not mean that I have to live just as they did or by their precepts.

Reminds me of a friend who had tattooed on his left knuckles ‘MUERTE’ and on his right knuckles ‘AMOR DE MADRE’. They were prison tattoos, with graphic errors—curiously, the tattooer could spell but hadn’t learned the correct shape of some letters.

Divagations aside, welcome to Textkit, Topher.

Edit: Hey, now typing 3 hyphens gives you a dash—I love it! (English orthography doesn’t use spaces before and after the dashes, Peter.)

Let’s try 4: ----

Hi Topher. Hope you like being here. Personally I don’t like tattoos, but a lot of people do. One of my girl-friends got a neat little tattoo on her butt & of course had to show everybody. Speaking of Greeks & Romans, weren’t the Thracians famous (notorious) for having tattoos? Wasn’t that one of the reasons the Greeks were down on them? Just occured to me-here is a terrific topic for a scholarly paper! (Ancient tattoos). If I wasn’t researching archaeology & women in Greek athletics, I’d jump into it. Anybody? Take care, Paige.

Dear el Bardo,

I prefer to use spaces. Why? First, it’s much more pleasing to the eye. Second, for clarity. Moreover, I prefer putting two spaces after periods, question marks, and exclamations. That is not all. I am also partial to the ‘Oxford comma’ and beautiful busty blondes. Go figure!

btw, I am not alone. The IDRC style guide recommends spaces before and after the em dash.

Hasta luego, muchacho.

“I prefer to use spaces.”

Knock yourself out, my boy-o.

“the em dash”
You’ll get an em dash by typing 3 hyphens; 2 gets you an en dash.
