I’m curious, how difficult to get into are Classics graduate programs in the UK? Obviously Cambridge and Oxford are very competitive–and probably out of my league–but what about the rest?
Also, in the US Classics departments at major universities keep getting smaller and smaller; many are closing for good. Is the situation similar in the UK?
Would it be hard for a person to find a college teaching job with a non-Oxford, non-Cambridge Phd in the UK?
Undergraduate at Cambridge is quite easy to get into, I think. After all, there is one course where you can turn up with no qualifications in Latin and show “enthusiasm” and experience.
Graduate-wise, I wouldn’t know.
It is likely extremely rare to find a non-Oxbridge Classics PhD. But undergrad. courses with Latin: http://search.ucas.co.uk/cgi-bin/hsrun/search/search/StateId/RXQSJoG1H-DCWvlktnukBSalTGRGA-Viyy/HAHTpage/search.HsKeywordSuggestion.whereNext?query=118&word=CLASSICAL&single=N
