Goodness where to start?

Well I’ll begin with that beginner book you guys recomend but are there any other suggestions? Anywhere I can find printable worksheets on the web? I mostly want to be able to read Latin…Starting can be a little overwhelming but once I get started I should be good to go…

hey, welcome to the site!

I have used Wheelock’s Latin text, which you should be able to find at any major bookstore. It is one that is relatively popular in college latin classes.

Many people prefer a more “natural” approach to language learning, in which case courses such as the Cambridge Latin course and Lingua Latina (Orberg) are ideal, as they basically just start you with reading simple sentences, and gradually work up to more complicated texts.

On this site you can find the D’ooge text for free, and print it off. I haven’t used it myself but lots of people like it!

My 2 cents:

I used Wheelock and grasped big parts but not others. I was definitely distracted by some of the silly stories and asides in the book. Still, though, it wasn’t a bad introduction.

I then got into D’Ooge and am now in the later stages of it. Everything “took” much better with the reading and studying of D’Ooge’s book. (I found a rough but solid copy from the turn of the century for $25 and I cherish it.) What really deepened my understanding of Latin was using Orberg’s Lingua Latina. All of the grammar I learned suddenly started to fall into place when reading the text of Lingua Latina.

That’s when I realized that reading as early as often is the way to go. Grammar is good, but I’ve learned best with some grammar and vocabulary and lots of reading.

Your results may vary, but give it some thought before you start. Good luck.

When you say

I was definitely distracted by some of the silly stories and asides in the book

do you mean the LATINA EST GAVDIVM…that was not part of the first few editions OR ?
Just wondering.

I recommend both wheelocks etc.. and lingua latina at the same time, I do not think that you will be disappointed. Learning to read latin will improve you grammar quicker.

Well this is actually the way I teach my students English. Reading is easily the best way to learn English. I was assuming it would be the same for Latin too. Now…I gotta figure out a way to get some of these books 'cause I live in Poland.

Yea, I am easily blown off course. lol.

I’m teaching a guy to read English and I’m doing what you do. I see it paying off already. As far as getting the books, is there a Polish Amazon.com store? If not, perhaps you can order from the US store and have them shipped overseas?

yeah I can probably go thru amazon.co.uk…but I get screwed on the pricing when you convert the currencies… i’ll just try to find what I can on the internet i guess. And I’m only learning as a sort of hobby to use what I learn about Latin as basis for whichever other European language I decide to study.

No doubt. That’s why Wheelock’s has a reading supplement that you can by.
