Hello,

Does anyone have a good explanation of how studium quibus arva tueri works grammatically? I get dative of possession with quibus, but why is tueri infinitive? My understanding is that the translation is “whose love watches over our fields” or something to that effect, but it just doesn’t make sense to me how tueri is being used with studium. I would sincerely appreciate some help if anyone can offer pointers.

“dique deaeque omnes, studium quibus arua tueri”

This might be rephrased more or less like this:

di deaeque, quibus studium [est] arva tueri = di deaeque, quorum officium/negotium est tueri arva

Or, alternatively: di deaeque, qui student (or studetis if you address the gods) tueri arva
