If you use a Mac, you may be familiar with the ABC-Extended keyboard layout, which allows you to easily input letters with macrons with <Alt+a>+. I’ve recently found that someone has ported that layout into something that can be installed into Windows, which can be found here http://andrewdunning.ca/Mac-Keyboard-Layouts-for-Windows/ .
I hope this helps anyone looking for such a thing in Windows! For me, that means that I now use Windows and OneNote in Windows when studying Latin, where I used to be in Mac OS X when doing that.
Very useful indeed, although I’m mainly thinking of the polytonic Greek support, which I assume this brings to Windows. The official Microsoft package was somewhat lacking compared to the OS X one, the last time I looked. I’ve spent only a little time typing Latin macrons, etc., and Apple does make it pretty easy.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t have Apple’s Greek polytonic support. I don’t remember where I read it from, but I read that Windows suffers from a technical limitation preventing it from composing characters via more than one dead key.
So far, I have been satisfied with Window’s Greek polytonic keyboard, following these instructions: http://www.dramata.com/Ancient%20polytonic%20Greek%20in%20Windows.pdf
