I hope all of the textkittens from the northeast US are safe and dry after the terrible flooding this week. I live right in the middle of it, in Delaware County, NY, but luckily both my cabin and the house that I’m watching this week are on hilltops, so I was able to sit tight and wait for things to dry up.
Maybe some of you saw the pictures in the New York Times yesterday. The picture on the front page is of a town a bit SE of me, but I stop at that gas station just about every time I travel to the NYC area. And the picture on page B6 of the four lane highway with a new gaping canyon is closer to me, and in fact I travel over that section pretty often to get to a friend’s house. Two truck drivers were killed when the road gave way.
Here are a few pictures that have been posted on the internet. This is one of the smaller gorges carved into Interstate 88:

This looks like a riverbed, but it is a dirt road that I use sometimes:

This is less than a mile from my cabin. It’s not bad at all compared to some other roads around here; many of them are impassible:

This is a fantastic picture I think. A makeshift footbridge made from a “Road Closed” sign:

The next town downriver was hit much harder. The entire main street was destroyed, and I suppose all of the businesses too. The supermarket had its windows broken in by the force of the water. I think the town is submerged even now.
Anyway, I hope everyone is ok.
