Out of curiosity… Is there any documentation with examples concerning swearing in the various dialects of greek?

We have quite a lot of quite colorful language from Aristophanes and graffiti.

Are you looking for something in particular?

I’m not looking for anything in particular, just examples of swearing in general. What were some taboo words and phrases? I’m not entirely sure why it appeals to me so much, I guess, but generally when learning a new spoken language, you learn this stuff too.

Well, pretty much the usual collection of anatomy, body products and actions we use today, but of course in Greek.

The article Six Greek Verbs of Sexual Congress - Classical Quarterly 44 (i) 51-77 (1991) - discusses not only the six verbs but other related matters of “low register” language. Just visit jstor.org from a University network and search on the title.

From time to time when reading material from these ancient cultures I am impressed by how different the people were. But then I learn that young men liked to carve things like δδ λαιχάζει εὖ onto walls 2500 years ago, and then I’m impressed by the universality of human nature.

Heh, this looks like a clerk-client conversation

Too bad I can’t have acces to that article…

Who would have imagined an artiicle on “low register” language could be so long and tedious. Mind you, the information is good, but it sure needs a lot of chewing and digesting.

No man forgets his original trade: the rights of nations and of kings sink into questions of grammar, if grammarians discuss them. - Samuel Johnson

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.
