Wow…I had quite a trip today. I went up to Seattle with my old Hebrew Prof and his first year Hebrew Class to see the Dead Sea Scrolls. It was pretty darn cool. I was amazed by a couple of things.

  1. How small the scrolls and the writing on them were. Those things were tiny, and they were mostly written in about the equivalent of 10pt font.

  2. That even though they were so old, some of them were so legible. The Psalms Scroll (Ps. 199) was a full 8 leaves long, and the scribe who copied it had incredible handwriting. I could read it like a book. I was stoked! The other thing that was cool was reading God’s divine name. It was writting in Paleo-Hebrew script in the scroll, so it really stood out. It was so cool to see such sacred manuscripts first hand. I will remember it for the rest of my life.

Now…to Israel to see the Great Isaiah scroll…that’s my next goal!

Hi Matt, that sounds so exciting! I’m jealous.

There is a special pleasure in being able to read ancient documents, even boring proclamations in stone, from originals.
