It’s never too early to bother with meter if you’re going to read verse (or prose, for that matter). For ancient Greek meter the best thing is West’s Introduction to Greek Metre. For Latin meter (which mostly follows Greek) one possibility is the Latin part of The Meters of Greek and Latin Poetry by Halporn and others. There’s also a set of lectures by David Butterfield in the online journal Antigone.

Sorry to ask again, but is there any work on the public domain you could recommend? Both books you sent are currently in print, and imported books here in Brazil are expensive (Halporn’s would cost me R$78, which isn’t that expensive, although no little money, but shipping would probably make it cost more; West’s doesn’t even seem to be available).
