Ἁλοῖεν correct accentuation

Reading Greek CUP prints “ἅλοιεν” but I think that the correctly accented aorist optative 3 pl of ἁλίσκομαι is ἁλοῖεν.

Am I missing something? I do hope that the few friends of mine who remain here are well in these troubling times. All the best.

I think you are right: ἑάλων is a root aorist like ἔγνων for γιγνώσκω

Yes in Attic it will be ἁλοῖεν, with short alpha, like the subjunctive ἁλῶ etc. (as in Phaedra’s mighty speech in the Hippolytus, 420 ὡς μήποτ᾽ἄνδρα τὸν ἑμὸν αἱσχύνασ᾽ ἁλῶ).

I’m hanging on, Peter, but old and demoralized and fading.

All the best,
Michael

Thanks for the replies.

I am sorry to hear that you are demoralised Michael. I can see from your posts that you still provide invaluable help here. It is a pity that this site is not as vibrant as it once was. But although I come here infrequently to read I rarely post for reasons which you know well. My “Reading Greek” class will soon finish the CUP book. It’s very satisfying teaching people to read from scratch and allowing them to develop at their own pace. So I hope that you draw some comfort from the fact that you have helped so many people over the years.

all the Best

Peter
