Classics: Potentially Puke Inducing?

Read the letter to Ted Turner by his father that begins:

“My dear son, I am appalled, even horrified, that you have adopted Classics as a major. As a matter of fact, I almost puked on the way home today.”

Uh, I read the letter, now who is Ted Turner?

He is the owner and founder of CNN.
He is the largest shareholder in Time Warner.
He promised to give the UN $1 Billion dollars.
He started the Turner foundation to support environmental causes.
He won the America’s Cup in 1977.
He colorized a lot of old black and white movies.

And all because of…Greek?

Uh, I read the letter, now who is Ted Turner?

The man owns/is the ceo of CNN (I forget which). According to this link he is quite a character…

ahh! thanks. I had no idea who he was… :unamused:

Damn, you just beat me. You might have added -

He’s married to Jane Fonda

He challenged Rupert Murdoch to a televised boxing match.

And of course there’s this quote:

“All the money is in the hands of these few rich people and none of them give any money away,” Turner told The New York Times in 1996. “It’s dangerous for them and the country. We may have another French Revolution and there’ll be another Madame Defarge knitting and watching them come in little oxcarts down to the town square and BOOM! Off with their heads!”

He seems to me to be a perfectly reasonable man (especially with regard to his choice of boxing opponent).

Also, I feel now is the time to derail this thread with the now customary demand that you start to use firefox instead of internet explorer. Highlighting a word or phrase, then right-clicking and selecting “Search the web for…” and having the results pop up in a tab behind your current page is surely the easiest way to Google anything.

uhh… yeha… I’ve so like heard of this firefox :unamused: . I suppose I could google it  .

uhh… yeha… I’ve so like heard of this firefox Rolling Eyes . I suppose I could google it Wink

Yes, rolling eyes. However, the characters who recommend it continually and in the most tiresome fashion do so for a reason. Internet Explorer does indeed…

Uh…almost. Pulled back from the brink…just. Well, since we’ve all heard that spiel before, I think I shall find another venue for my open-source-themed enthusiasm.

Well I don’t know anything about Ted Turner’s daddy but I hate that man very much.

So Teddy has a lot of paper. If you find a lovely partner who is worth the world, who makes you feel like a million dollars squared (10^12), riches don’t matter. Because, when you die, you don’t take it with you. You just take the love of people and that stems from your lifelong partner. With this person irrespective of looks one can see deep inside and by means of encouragement from her/him your dreams can come true if you just put your mind to it, regardless of what any one else says, reach for the sky!

…Or you can listen to Brandy and eat jaffa cakes all day, which I certainly do not

I agree with the father - to do classics as a ‘major’ would make me vomit. I hate reading anything. Apart from Swedish because it sounds funky.

Not to derail the thread, but has the man done something particular for this? I’m not terribly well informed on US business leaders. He can’t be worse than Rupert Murdoch, owner of Faux News.

Anytime that one person has THAT much power, it generally tends toward the corrupted side than toward the righteous side. Power and money are both significant corruptors. So I generally do not trust the ultra-rich at all.

All of that aside from the fact that CNN sucks.

I believe Benissimus was referring to Mr. Turner’s Dad.

… reach for the sky!

Where did you get that lovely qoute?- It dosn’t sound like you at all!

I know, I just about laughed my asinum off when I got my inspiring message of the day from Episcopus.
