Car Wreck

Yep, that’s right…I got in a wreck! I was rear ended by a fellow driving a very nice Volvo SUV who was doing about 50mph (her was very busy on his cell phone rather than watching where he was going) when I was almost stopped… But wait…it gets better…he hit me on a bridge!! He spun me across two lanes of traffic at pretty good speed (his driver side hit my passengers side)…but the good news is I am alive (ok I guess it’s good he’s alive too). The bad news is…I got some whiplash that I’m dealing with…and he totalled my rig. Which was pretty hard to do, considering I drive HUGE Chevy Tahoe (Epi reckons driving a gas hog like it to “farting in God’s face”) which weighs in around 5000 pounds. Velocity would seem to do it though. He bent my frame pretty bad (the passenger doors wouldn’t even open) and his insurance company totalled it.

So now comes the hassle of having to find a new car (I’m getting another Tahoe) and I only have till the 30th then I have to turn the rental car back in. Although my wife does have a car, we are definitely a two car family…so things are going to get tricky if I don’t get one soon.

So…have you ever experienced a good wreck before?? This was my second one of this type, but the first one I was the one doind the rear ending…hmmmm…I suppose this might be Karma working!

Just thought I’d share…I don’t usually whine like this…but I’ve been very frustrated, dealing with the insurance company and driving what feels like a roller skate…so I thought I’d vent… and I must say…I do feel a little better now

I’m so sorry to hear that, Kopio! how dreadful! Car crashes are the absolute worse; two already in my relatively brief life have been more than enough! I highly recommend you see a chiropractor immediately; there is a great deal more damage done there than is either visible or distinctly noticeble — until years later when the resultant problems become so bad that you need surgery on your spine to correct them.

Salutem tibi.

Thank you for your kind words Lucus. I went to my Chiropractor right after I called my insurance company…about 2 hours after the wreck. I have been seeing him 3 times a week and right now gasp I am having to get hour long massages 3 times a week to loosen me up ( I am very stiff and sore still…but the pain has lessened a bunch). The Massage therapist does the deep tissue Swedish style and at time it can nearly bring you to tears though!

Wow! Glad you’re ok!

Chiropractors have worked wonders for me too after crashes but you might also consider phsyiotherapy (if for no other reason then when dealing with an area of your body as important and commonly used as the neck you can never get too many opinions!).

My friend drives a Tahoe and they are quite the vehicle specimen, perhaps you should consider purchasing a Hummer  until people learn how to drive! :unamused:

It is good you’re ok, Kopio; finding a new car may be a hassle, but at least you can still have hassles

This topic shocked me slightly; it could have been a lot worse, people perhaps wondering why Kopio had not posted in such a long time. However I am very glad that you are as well as can be expected. I remember last year in my physics class some policemen came in to show us the effects of car crashes at seemingly low speeds (i.e. 20mph) hitting the side of another car. Quod me perterruit. Needless to say I quit physics. And Lucus in two car crashes? I must attribute this to american roads, american drivers, and americans. Did Lucus ram some one who called Hans Orberg a twat, then call it a car crash?

The first a few years ago you may attribute to an anomolous series of incidents: I was in high school and I announced the basketball games there in the evening, and a game went into tripple overtime, so it was getting late and cold. This was in March and the weather had warmed well beyond 60°F that day and all the snow had melted — however, while the lousy game went into overtime, the temperature suddenly dropped to well below freezing, without anyone in the county taking notice to salt the roads, and I was making the short passage home, when on a small but critical bridge I hit black ice. The car, my mother’s, was slightly damaged; the airbags went off.

The other time, two summers ago, an old lady pulled out in front of me on a 45 mph road (which therefore was my speed). It’s like your worst nightmare kind of car-doing-something-completely-unexspected-and-stupid thing. That one totalled my poor car, a red Ford Taurus that my grandmother had given to me as a graduation present.

I’m a safe and cautious driver, and my accidents are the result of alien carelessness and Pensylvania’s bad combination of erratically irregular weather and poorly maintained roads. May you never get into an accident yourself, Episcope.

Kopio, I’m glad to hear you’re receiving the proper medical and theraputic attention. I’m sure you’ll be fine. Et hoc praeteribit.

Hi Matt,

I am truly sorry for the pain (at all levels) you are going through. Quelle drag.

At least you have the slight consolation that it wasn’t your fault. I once upon a time TOTALed my minivan. I missed a sharp turn on a dark, wet, country road in Virginia; went airborne, and landed on some boulders. For reasons best left obscure I should not have been behind the wheel. In fact, so distorted was my consciousness that I have ever since maintained that the cop who found me would have been justified in shooting me in the head.

I have since become a very careful and prudent driver.

Get well.

Cordially,

Paul

I’m glad you’re ok, Kopio. but luckily you were in a HUGE chevy tahoe (hey, if it has the juevos to fart in God’s face, all the better, right?, but seriously, if you were in a minicooper, you’d be pretty messed up.), and it, in the manner of a true friend or a loyal guard, took most of the damage. I don’t know if you have kids or not, so I don’t know if I should be glad as well that your children weren’t in the car as well. btw, in case you want to get another car besides a tahoe, i suggest a Ram w/a hemi. it’s like driving a bison, man, never felt so alive.

good luck finding a huge car (i hate driving roller skates  ),
Jon

Ouch! Can’t think of many things worse than having a car accident like this (ok, I mean besides the usual morbid list of “bad things that can happen to a person”)

Glad you are more or less ok.

Had a similar one and having to do most of my work sitting down means my back is pretty messed up already so I can sympathise, not to mention having to deal with various insurance companies has left a permanent trauma and therefore I feel for you!

Nice to hear you drove that monstrosity. I guess I’ll have to feel more kindly towards them next time I feel like grumbling when on of them is trying to take a turn in a narrow street

Omigosh, that’s scary. I am so glad to hear you are alive and recovering well. Yeah, getting those massages can be rough, eh? I can’t believe this guy was so distracted by his cell phone conversation that he couldn’t see the HUGE Tahoe he was about to run into. (I have a friend who drives a Tahoe, they’re not rinky dink cars that get blown around like rag dolls). But

I’m glad that you’re OK, Kopio. I’m sorry that your car isn’t.

One of the major reasons I quit taking driving lessons long before I was ready to get a license is that driving is one of the scariest things I have ever done. At least as a pedestrian, I can stay on the sidewalk if things look too dangerous, and as a bus rider I can talk on the cellphone comfortably (or read, or space out).

Thank you all so much for your kind words. I will have you know that I am most certainly smiling now

I especially liked Irene calling my Tahoe a “mostrosity”…you must remember Irene…our roads are probably a little wider than yours

And Paul…what a funny story!! I think you might of started off on the wrong foot with the officer by giving him a “ouk emoige” to start things off. Minivans catching air…that’s pretty cool too!

Anyhow…I have a friend looking for cars for me right now, and he is a wholesale auto guy…so I’m hoping to get into something wirth about 5k more than I can afford at a price I can afford. He just called and told me I havce to come down and look at a 2000 Yukon Denali…I’m already liking the sound of that  :open_mouth:  I’m gonna try and upgrade a little from my old ride…which was pretty nice to start with…into something a little plusher…with leather, heated seats and all the bells and whistles. We’ll see…

Speaking with the voice of the San Francisco Bay Area, consider getting a hybrid.

I’ve only ever been in 2 minor ones, someone “rear-ended” me and a woman ran a red light and hit me, at least in the last one my dirt-bike training took over and I was able to spin the car sideways to avoid getting hit where I was sitting!
We have so many mobile phone “pests” on the roads here, despite advertising campaigns and hefty fines, they can’t leave those phones alone!

Watch out for post accident stress problems too - they can sneak up on you and you suddenly find yourself snarling at children, wife, your best friend for no apparent reason and getting upset over complete trivia. Accidents can damage more than your body. I hope the police charged the mobile phone guy with something serious and he has to pay for all your medical expenses.

The thought never crossed my mind

I need a big rig to pull my utility trailer, pack around my grandkids, and pull my boat (once I get the motor I need for it). I am far too big of a fan of horsepower to consider a hybrid. Something about 285 horsepower and 360 ft of torque…it’s really hard to do that without eating some petrol!

Thanks for the suggestion though GGG…now if you told me to consider the sourdough…

Ok…update time. PeterD wished me well on another thread…and I realized that I hadn’t updated everyone.

I am slowly getting better. Today I finally shook a headache that had lasted two days and through approx 32 Advil and 6 or 7 Vicoden. I had an hour long massage today and that helped a little. Mind you, they’re not the pleasant relaxing massages that you like to get, rather they are the slightly painful, working out the knots from whiplash variety. It did help that I was listening to a wonderful Diana Krall CD whilst being worked on (she soothes me almost as well as Miles).

I did find another vehicle. I got a 99 Tahoe. It didn’t have the leather and all of the other Epicurean features I was so hoping it would have! It does, however, have only 51,000 miles on it, by one owner, who was born in 1935!! I put wheels and tires on it (17’ Denali pulloffs and deep treaded Toyo rubber) last week, got a thrust alignment (it was pulling a little to the left), and hopefully in the next week or so, I will get the exhaust done…I like a flowmaster with dual exhaust (preferably Chrome tipped bologna cut)…for a little extra hp and that beefy sound (yes I am a bit of a gearhead/redneck) that makes it sound like a V8! The exhaust will get me about another 2MPG also (my last Tahoe got 15-16MPG…this one got 13MPG on the first tank). After that all I will need is a K&N cold air intake, and this rig will be pretty much the same as my old one. I do hope to eventually get a powered Sub (as a matter of fact I DO play the Bass Guitar) and an iPod for it…but that will probably come when I reach a settlement (which will probably still be quite a while). I spend quite a bit of time in my vehicle, so it is important for me to be very comfortable in it.

Other than that…I am continuing to heal. It has been a rough few weeks, and I am tired of almost never really feeling normal or good. I am still having trouble sleeping, and I get really sore after a full days work. Last week when I mowed the lawn I was a hurtin unit when I was done! I do appreciate all of your continued well wishes and/or prayers. And once again PeterD…you can NOT change your sig…it is one of the funniest I’ve seen in quite a while

Good to hear you are recovering! Poor baby, still have to endure those rough hourly massages, eh?

I have to wonder … um … why in the world are you mowing the lawn? Surely the lawn can wait…

Must be good to have wheels again. I hope gas prices are lower in WA than they are in CA. We’re paying $3 per gallon for 92.

Yeah…I know…it’s been a long time…but when I was posting pictures of my flower beds today I realized I had never posted a picture of my new Rig. FWIW…I am feeling MUCH better now, and I only have to go to the chiropractor when I feel the need (tomorrow I may feel the need)…anyhow…here is my new Tahoe…it’s a 99, and it had 52k on it when I got it.
