Been a long time gone, Constantinople

…but on October 17, 2007, it was GREEK.

Greece defeated turkey 1-zip in the City to finish top of Group C, thus sending the European champions Greece to UEFA EURO 2008. As for the turks chances of going through now, let’s just say they’re “cooked.”

Great to be back!

Welcome back! Too bad the major ongoing discussions won’t interest you – one is about US politics and the other about whether Greek is superior to Latin. I know you tend to shy away from those issues.

Thank you.

US politics? I don’t know where to begin. The chimp’s veto of the S-CHIP program is disgraceful. This chimp—this chimp who never worked an honest, hard day’s work in his life; this chimp who’d probably fail a Wal-Mart employee aptitude test, this chimp who “flew” fighter jets… I got it: “support” the troops, screw the kids. And this Larry Craig fellow. He just can’t fess up, can he? He can’t fess up that he has a palate for “fleshy cucumbers.”

Greek versus Latin? I don’t know why anyone would bother with Latin, or with any other barbarian language. As I have said before, the Romans were tripping over themselves to learn Greek. Too bad the modern Romans don’t have the presence of mind to learn modern Greek, the most euphonious language of all. Right, IreneY?

It’s great to be back, edonnelly.

Ahhh…I greatly missed your fervor and vitriolic comments. It’s beginning to feel like home again

All righty, then. You just made THE list.

Let’s see here:

-Arnold M. Picker
-Ed Guthman
-Howard Stein
-John Conyers
-Paul Newman
-Peter D.

Newman was great in Cool Hand Luke. Loved the line, “What we got here is [a] failure to communicate.”

It’s a worthy list, Amadeus. However, with all due modesty, I was kind of hoping to make the World’s Greatest Lovers of History shortlist.

So let me get it straight: Each time we’ve lost from Turkey here (not, once, nor twice I’m afraid) Athens became Turkish again? We needed a new Revolution to gain it back or something? Did the last match in Karaiskaki meant that I missed the Turkish authorities taking control of Pireaus although I live there? Boy, I must get out more

Oh, and I bothered to learn Latin because some idiotic Greeks, for the last century or so, think that you need Latin to enter some University Schools including mine. Stupid sods! I don’t know what’s wrong with these guys! I mean even those in favour of Puristic Greek thought so. Tch tch tch!

Long time no see
