Archimedes in a Palimpsest

Has anyone seen heard this story? Always cool when they find an ancient manuscript hidden. The picture of the document is very cool:

Chris

I first learned about this from the NOVA program that aired a few years ago. Very interesting - I can’t wait until the whole thing is published. I also first learned the meaning of πάλιν when I looked up the etymology of “palimpsest”, which is how I remember it even now.

I even went to the Walters once, hoping it’d be on display, but no such luck. :frowning: Maybe someday.

I too saw the NOVA show on Archimedes’ palimpsest. In total, I’ve seen it 3 times, and am still not tired of it! In fact, the mysteries of the palimpsest inspired me to learn Ancient Greek… correction… I did intend to learn that language before seeing the show, but grudgingly, as Ancient Greek seemed so dull: now, not so much. :unamused:

Btw, that Archimedes sure was a genius. I mean, infinitesimal calculus looooong before Newton…Wow!

P.S.: Cdm2003, you do know that those paintings in the palimpsest are fake, right? They were added in the XXth century to increase its value.

This is one of the reasons I am so keen to study ancient Greek & latin - these discoveries are so exciting. I read about this a few years ago and was wondering what progress had been made.
I have been reading Thompson’s “Latin & Greek Paleography”, a very interesting book if you are into this area of study.

I did not know this…but I can’t say it surprises me. Reminds me of the Mr. Bean episode where he’s in the rare book room of the library attempting to trace an illumination. It’s not long before he brings out the box cutters.
