I finally finished the redesign of http://www.aoidoi.org. In terms of appearance, very little actually changed, though I hope it looks a bit less stern. The image system I used for Greek fonts in the older works has been replaced by Unicode (except for one file, soon to be updated). CSS trickery has been employed, so non-PDF pages should print much more attractively now.
Files have been shuffled around a bit, but there’s a tricksy set of redirects which should transparently send you to the file you wanted. But if anything you expect to be able to see has gone missing, please let me know.
For the time, I have removed poem texts which did not yet have commentary.
While I appreciate the conversion from images to Unicode, I actually prefer the look of the old site by quite a bit. The new layout just looks .. well, it does not appeal to me. Perhaps it’s the stern quality of the old layout I like.
I like the layout, but I have a question about the fonts. When I look see the Sappho poem linked above, the mu’s seem like they are a font size lower than the rest of the text. Is that just me and Safari, or are there font issues there?
It’s every Mac OSX user and Safari. For OSX the web page will paint in the very first font in the font-family, which is Cochin, an oldstyle face I’m fond of. It has no Greek unicode characters, so for that it falls through to Gentium. For mysterious reasons, Cochin does have a mu in the unicode range, so that shows up. I’m hoping to find a fix for that. I may just remove Cochin.
