After six years of running a server/bandwidth co-op in a friend’s basement (and a little help from a business class network connection) we have decided to retire the machine and go our separate ways. It’s no longer cheaper for us to manage this ourselves and the provider of the “business class” connection has irritated us more than enough over the years. So I need to find a new place to host Aoidoi.org.
I’ll be doing some research on my own, but I know some other textkittens probably use hosting services. If anyone happens to be insanely happy about a particular provider, I’d love to hear about it. For my needs a service that just hands me my own linux VM would be best — I need to run several daemons constantly for things like Diogenes and I will eventually need to run Hunchentoot in addition to a normal Apache.
You might look at asmallorange.com I’ve been extremely happy with them since moving there about 2 years ago. I have a basic sort of hosting plan, but it sounds like you are looking for something like their VPS service. That gets a little too technical for me, but the company is great and they very much believe in giving you as much control as possible (they are like c where most companies are more like visual basic).
I ended up choosing them because when I did my research, they were one of the only companies I found that had near universal praise for their service with almost no complaints – they do have a “testimonials” section in their forum which has both the good and the bad, so I’d look there first to see what the current “negatives” are.
