alter alterum

Having some problems with the following line from Cap XXX of Lingua Latina:

Hospites sunt amici quorum alter alterum semper bene recipit domum suam, etiam si inexspectatus venit

I’m not sure how exactly to translate “alter alterum” and it looks like that is key to the whole sentence.

“of whom the one always gladly receives the other at his home”

When there are two alter’s or alius’s in a single clause and in different cases, they act reciprocally.

Here you might translate it “each of whom always receives the other into his house,” or “the two of whom always receive each other into their respective homes…”.
