Does anyone know how “adnuntio” came to be “annuntio”? The later seems to only obfuscate the root of “ad”. Is this a change inspired by some sense of euphony?
It’s a process called assimilation. Very common in Latin as well in Greek (and in so many other languages…).
Ah, very interesting. I guess I’m somewhat familiar with this in the English language, but didn’t know the formal name for it. Thanks!
You also have partial assimilation, for example with ab-ferre, which becomes auferre.
