Accent questions

Hello all,

I’m wrestling with learning how the rules of accentuation in ch24 of CGCG are to be applied. Recessive accentuation seems simple, but I’m having some difficulties with persistent accentuation of non-finite verb forms (participles and infinitives).

In particular, and using παιδεύω as an example, are the acc. pl. masc./neut. present active participles proparoxytone? And is the acc. pl. fem. pres. act. ppl. paroxytone? And ditto same two questions for the acc. pl. aor. act. ppls.

Thanks!

Hi Mitch,
Yes, masc. παιδεύοντας (short α), fem. παιδευούσας (long α, contrast nom. παιδεύουσαι). Similarly aor. παιδεύσαντας, -σάσας.

i recommend Probert’s A New Short Guide to the Accentuation of Ancient Greek. it has a lot of practical help and some exercises.

mwh - i think i sent you a message a few weeks ago did you not get it?

@mwh Thanks yes I figured there was probably long α in fem sg

@seneca2008 Thanks will add that to my list of possible future book purchases
