a wannabe polymath

First post banality alert. This forum looks a great resource - surprising to find more than a handful of people, let alone a thriving forum!

I’ve just started out looking at Greek. More than 25 years ago I was lucky enough to have had the option of learning either Latin or Greek at school - or both. I had several months of bitter, acrimonious arguments with my parents who put a lot of pressure on me to do both; I wanted to do neither. Eventually we compromised and I did some Latin (I’ve forgotten most of it).

I can’t quite remember the context, but a couple of months ago I had a bit of a daydream where I was thinking that one of the highest accolades anyone could have would be to be described as a “polymath”. The more general reading and exploring I’ve done the more I’ve realised how much a good overall general knowledge depends on a decent knowledge of the classics. People realised it for hundreds of years. My parents did. Are we in a latter day Dark Ages?

Anyhow after a whistlestop reading tour the other day I wondered “Why not?” and find myself with the “Reading Greek” books - only a few hours in so far but already enjoying it. Let’s see how it goes.

welcome to textkit, and good luck with your journey!

For whatever it’s worth, I do suspect we are in a new dark ages. (After all, how many of those SSDs will be readable in a decade, let alone in a millennium?)

Good luck to you! I’ve been doing something similar (coming to try my hand at Greek long, long after school), and have been having a lot of fun with it!
