a simple decision

I am taking Latin 1 at a state college next semester. If I choose to I can also take Greek 1. Both classes are being offered through the Classics department. The schedule for both classes is Monday through Friday each meeting for one hour a day. Right now I’m leaning toward taking Latin and Greek.

For or against; any input would be appreciated.

Yes! I wholeheartedly urge you to take both. You’ll be doubly rewarded, I swear it.

Just curious, but what pronunciation of either language do they use at English speaking universities? Greek with theta as English th or as t-h, and pitch or stress accent? Do they round long oo and iotazcise long ee in Latin? Aspiration?

Pronunciation (in my experience) depends a lot on the department – and on the individual professor. I have never had any professors who used pitch accent in Greek, though. Students are taught the basics of how Greek and Latin would have sounded, but in actual practice…

That’s essentially it. Some professors don’t even care for accents at all. I try to keep the pitch when I read it, however.

It’s great to take both if you can… but if you’re brand new to both languages then it might be tough… there is a lot of memorization involved, and you might find yourself mixing up your vocab and such… but definitely go for it if you want!
