A bit of an interloper

I am not a scholar at all - so I beg of you all some indulgence. I am in fact a mathematician, and currently my research has led me back to some classical Greek mathematics (Euclid, Archimedes, and so on). All of their work has of course been published many many times over the past 500 years or so in exemplary English translations. However, much of the glossaries and commentaries, especially in the older translations, include plenty of Greek terms - at the time, anyone learned enough to be reading mathematics could be expected to have had a solid grounding in the classics. Such of course is not the case today.

This means that I’m constantly coming up against words which I can transliterate (as a mathematician, I do know the Greek alphabet!) but have no idea how they might have been pronounced. Hence my hopeful inclusion on these boards, and the hope that, even with no Latin and less Greek, I will not be expelled with howls of rage.
