Just for clarification, what do you mean by a "word"?
For example, are "amo, amas, amat" three words or one word?
ἐς Τροίαν πειρώμενοι ἦνθον ᾿Αχαιοί,
καλλίστα παίδων: πείρᾳ θην πάντα τελεῖται.
Theocritus, Idyll 15

I assumed that the dictionary entries would be a accurate reflection of how many words / lemmas each book contains. The thought that "amas" and "amat" would be considered different words didn't really occur to me. And yes, the ones that I checked out were based on dictionary entries. The ones from the first post were from another source.

I'll recheck the Pons Tirorum at least!

For the life of me I can not figure out how I must have misestimated Pons Tirorum. It actually has almost a thousand dictionary entries including the ones that the book says it assumes the knowledge of...

Anyway. I leave this as it is. That's 25 entries with each book conceivably introducing only a few new words per page compared in addition to the lot preceding it.

Another go beginning with the easiest. Word count doesn't tell the whole story, some may have longer and more complicated sentences, or more advanced grammar, but word count is still a good hint. If you are looking up too many words, try another, and come back to it later. And a few have audio.
I'm working my way through this list. It is amazing how much lots of reading helps. Happy reading

Not a book, but worth mentioning: clicking through every page of every 'lectionis' and 'extra' story at trescolumnae.com gives you a a long, graded, continuous narrative, currently with a total length of 154.475 (!) words, using a vocab of 3191 (of which about 950 are names, numerals, singletons and a few typos) (according to my counts).
