But Pilate’s next order, seizure of the temple’s treasury, arouses the Jewish populace to indignant fury.

Thus when Ben-Hur arrives in Jerusalem a few days later, he finds the city in a state of riot!

I see you are men of my own race from Galilee. What has incurred your wrath?

Video vos viros mei ipsius generis Galilæos esse. Quid autem vestram iram suscitavit?

Ὁρῶ ὑμᾶς ἄνδρας τοῦ ἐμαυτοῦ γένους Γαλιλαίους ὄντας. Τί δὲ τὴν ὀργὴν ὑμῶν ἤγειρεν;

Pilate has taken the treasure of our temple to pay for public works. When we marched to his palace in protests, he set his dogs of Roman soldiers upon us!

We lack arms and have no leader trained in the ways of war.

Would you accept a true son of Judea, if he can prove his skill in arms and provide the funds you need to raise and train an army?

Ἆρα δέχοισθε ἂν ἕνα τῇ ἀληθείᾳ υἱὸν τῆς Ἰουδαίας ὄντα, εἰ οὗτος ἐπιδεικνύοιτο τὴν τῶν ὅπλων ἐμπειρίαν καὶ παρέχοι τὰ χρήματα ὧν χρῄζετε τοῦ συλλέγειν τε καὶ ἀσκεῖν στρατιώτας;

We cannot fight the legionnaires of Rome with our bare fists. If you are such a man as you have described, join us tonight at our camp outside the city!

Non possumus Romanis cum militibus pugnis certare. Si vero hujusmodi es qualem exposuisti, conveni in castra nostra extra urbem!

Later that night, Ben-Hur reveals his life story to the Galileans, and promises to supply the funds and leadership necessary to mold their helpless band into a trained and powerful force…

Illa nocte, serius autem, Benhur, vita ejus Galilæis revelata, pollicetur se opes tributurum et ducturum eos ut inordinati instituantur in fortissimum exercitum.

Then all is agreed. I will join your men at Bethany and there tell you of the king of the Jews under whose banner we shall march to victory!

God knows we lack neither hope nor courage. With weapons and training we shall be able to purge all Israel of our Roman oppressors!

Deus scit nos neque spe egere neque animo. Quando igitur armati et instructi erimus, poterimus mundare Israël a Romanis qui opprimunt nos.
