Tarandrus Rudolphus

Post by mingshey »

I tried a modification to the widely spread "Reno erat Rudophus".

Tarandrus Rudolphus {reno (reindeer skin) -> tarandrus(reindeer) }
nasum rubrum habebat;
si quando hunc videbas,
hunc candere tu dicas.

Omnes tarandri alii { renores -> tarandri }
semper hunc deridebant;
cum misero Rudolpho
in ludo non ludebant

Sanctus Nicholas dixit
nocte nebulae,
“Rudolphe, naso claro
nonne traham tu duces?” { carum(wagon?) -> traha(sleigh) }

Tum tarandri clamabant, { renores -> tarandri }
“Rudolphe, delectus es?
cum naso rubro claro
historia descendes!”

Hello Mingshey
I tried these verses, but I prefer what you have. I also think "reno" for "tarandrus" is OK (after Caesar, in spite of L&S & OLD).
Has stantias conatus sum, sed quod habes praefero. Licet "reno" pro "tarandrus", ut credo (apud Julium Caesarem).

Rudolphus est tarandrus
naso rubro polito
qui sicumquam eum vides
perlucet dicas certô.

Omnis tarandrus alius
deridens lacessensque
ut rudolphus ludat obstabat
in ludis cuiusmodicumque.

Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows

All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
Play in any reindeer games

Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say
Rudolph with your nose so bright
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?

Nocte Bonâ nebulae*
Santa venit. Ait:
Te naso lucidissimo
Traham ducere volo

*Vigiliâ quâdam nebulae
*Vigiliâ Natûs nebulae

Then all the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee
Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer
You'll go down in history.

Tunc adorant tarandri
Magnâ voce Rudolphum
Polito naso rubro
Tarandrûm clarissimum.

reno / tarandrus ? Secundùm Google Translate:
reindeer (English); reindier (Dutch); renne (French); τάρανδος (Greek); renna (Italian); rena (Portuguese); reno (Spanish); ren (German); renar (Swedish); reinsdyr (Norwegian); rensdyr (Danish); renos (Catalan); reni (Romanian)

Unless errors are spotted, here is the final version which I like (I like the other person's latin version, too), with the same number of syllables as the original song. Or putting tarandrus from the other version, and changing accordingly, you can keep the same rhythm.
Eccam versionem meam ultimam, quae mihi placet (aliam etiam amo), nisi eam vitia habere videatur! Totidem syllabas habet quàm carmen pristinum anglicé. Vel "tarandrus" pro "reno" et itaquè alibi.

Rudolphus erat reno
Naso rubro polito
Qui nasus si videas
Perlucet dicas certô.

Omnes renores eum
Derident lacessuntque.
Rudolpho secum negant
ludere et quâcumque.

Nebulae Vigiliâ*
Santa venit. Ait:**
Te naso clarissimo
Traham ducere volo.

Tunc adorant renores
Magnâ voce Rudolphum
Polito naso rubro
Renorum clarissimum.

*Vel "Nocte Bonâ nebulae"
**Paenè sed non verùm diphongum habet!
