Does anybody here get what's been going on with my sig?

Post by GlottalGreekGeek »

For the past month or so, I've had a running, er, inside joke with my signatures. I don't know if anybody here is the right kind of insider to get it, in fact, I doubt anybody is. But if somebody does get it, I'll let 'em spill the beans; if not, then I'll explain in a few days.

To recap, my sigs :

Tired of people who can't stand straight or speak clearly? Join the STOP GLOTTAL SHOCK movement!

Need more crisp diction in your life? Join the STOP GLOTTAL SHOCK movement!

Articulate! Three cheers for Articulation! Join the STOP GLOTTAL SHOCK movment!

Exaggerate, enunciate, and join the STOP GLOTTAL SHOCK movement!

And of course my current signature.

Yep I got it, you're one of the Von Trapp family singers with the strict Austrian dad right. :)

I haven't a clue. I look forward to enlightenment on the matter, since I've been puzzling over these for some time. :)

I tried to get info through google about joining, but since I found nothing, I figured you were just toying with the feelings of twangy bards.

I thought I was onto it when I posted in here (about 4 messages down) -- I was offering you another elocution exercise. I assumed that's what you were doing, given your interest in the theater.

It reminds me of a saying my sister has that she uses with her kids - it goes something like: the mouth, the teeth, the tongue, enunciate, articulate, do it again. :D

I'm with William on this one....I don't have any idea, but I have most certainly noticed and wondered.....

So...... You gonna keep us in the dark?

I googled around a bit:

"stop glottal shock" will give you one hit. It will explain the origin of GGG's signatures, I think.

But I'm curious about the 'inside joke' part of it: it seems like a very serious document to me.

Oh, I just noticed: Democritus spotted it too.

Adelheid

Democritus and Adelheid got it!

The insiders are people who have taken theatrical voice lessons.

Most diction warm-ups/exercises are *surprise* tongue twisters. However one of the first diction excercises I ever memorized was one of the rare ones which did not twist at all. It goes -

Stop Glottal Shock
Stand Straight, Speak Clearly
Crisp Diction
Articulate, Articulation
Exaggerate, Enunciate
The Tip of the Tongue, the Lips, and the Teeth

One teacher I had a long time ago used the last line as a warm up in itself.

This is how I first heard the word "glottal".

Speaking of diction warm-ups. my username here happens to be a tongue twister.

Something always did come to mind when I saw those sigs, but I'm not game to post it here.

I was kind of hoping the answer would be, "I just really like glottal consonants." :)
