The Episcopal Christmas Message

Post by Episcopus »

Since the Pope himself gives a christmas message it is only apt that I your resident bishop say a few simple yet serious things about the coming year. May it bring to all less of harsh times and much enjoyment seek it before you perish. It is snowing here and I can feel all the little girls jumping with joy. Which annoys me, so without further a-do, this is in Latin of course.

α. Papae ipsius ritu dedeceret Episcopum illum Latinae maximum hodiernum auctorem vobis Christi diei nullum nuntium edere.

β. Aspera tempora patimur. Hic dies quamquam sit multis mollis in alium citissime mutabit. Nonnunquam forsan velitis desistere. Quidam vestrum mente agitabitis sui caedem.

δ. Ne aegritas homines vincat, oportet galeas perlucidas super penem deponi. Nemo vult rubrum episcopum! Si vultis id ferire, inter vos protegite. Quamvis dicendi modus sic non videatur, gravissimum.

ε. At vero maestus fit Episcopus quod pessime iuvenes se gerunt. Egomet etiam sapientiae quantovis nescio an haec propter sint iuventutis intelligentiae inopiam, namque vero hodie videntur etiam dulcium minima esse cerebra. Quae mentes Latinitatis nil praeberent. Est maiore parte claritatis sibi gratia. Etiam innocentes. Desistite statim. Unici sitis. Vos estis mundi futura. Legite discite globum invertite.

OK, I can follow most of this, but not this bit:

ἆρα οἴει τὸν ἱερέα κακῶς ἐπέπληξα;

What does it mean?

If I say οἴει is parenthetical, "do you think", does that clear it up?

It took me some time, but I figured it out now. I mixed up the aorist first person with the third.

Is my grammar wrong?

(I could find a word for Latin, as in southern-Italian. But I couldn't find a word for the language itself, so I had to refur to it in some other way.)

How did you follow it with that spelling mistake that I only just noticed? ;)

At the moment I improvise a lot, so spelling mistakes are not that obvious to me all the time.

But where is that mistake then? In the line I quoted? Let me know.

Regards,
Adelheid

In my first line I said σιγεῖς where I should have said σιγᾷς.

This is because, for some reason, I must have thought the word was σιγέω (in its uncontracted form), whereas it is in fact σιγᾰω.

(Verbs are nothing but trouble.) :)
