Le Latin Sans Peine by C. Desessard

Post by classicist »

I once owned a copy of this book many years ago but never used it. I no longer have a copy.

Just curious as to whether anyone on this forum actually used/uses this book and what they think of it.

I once came across a book called Latin with Laughter, which some young joker had amended to Latin with Slaughter.

I've got it in both French and German (latein). The German version is arranged much better than the French one.
Assimil teaches Latin in a very different way. You learn the dialog and the grammar might be whatever. So in the first dialog there is a future passive (actually a deponent verb). Strangely I find this more annoying in Latin than I would in a modern Language (Go figure!). I find "Lingua Latina" much easier to understand, but I do use bits of Assimil when it is about the same thing as my Lingua Latina lesson. (for example deponent verbs). I did try learning Latin with Assimil only, but crashed and burned about 20 chapters in, but I do think it is a useful additional resource, and also have a lot of "modern" situation, which could be helpful to be able to speak Latin.

I know some German, but don't know French, so if you were interested we could see how much it would cost to ship the French book to you (I live in Australia). Shipping might cost more than the Book!!

I first learned Latin with this method before switching to LLPSI.

Pros: many explanations, humor, various situations
Cons: no macrons, limited content (only one book)
Depending on the person: needs another language, and uses word-to-word translation in order to get the way of thinking, modern vocabulary, not exactly progressive.
