An experimental physicist by the name of Griffin one day came upon an astounding scientific secret formula. Seeking a place where he could continue his experiments in seclusion from curious eyes, he came to the town of Iping, England, in the middle of winter.

A fire, in the name of human charity! A room and a fire!

Come in, sir. The rent will be two sovereigns a week. Warm yourself by the fireplace while I fix up some dinner.

Ignem supplicō tibi, cubiculum vērō et ignem!

Intrā, vir! Mercēs erit duo dēnāriī septimā quāque diē. Dum cēnam parō, calface tē ad focum!

Minutes later

Dinner is ready, sir. Can I take your hat and coat, and give them a good dry in the kitchen?

Paulō post...

Cēna parāta 'st, vir. Licetne mihi petasum palliumque tuōs sūmptōs in culīnā exsiccāre?

Τὸ δεῖπνον παρεσκευάσατο, ἄνερ. Ἆρ' ἔξεστί μοι τὸν πέτασον καὶ τὸ ῑ̔μάτιόν σου λαβούσῃ ἐν τῷ μαγειρείῳ ἀποξηραίνειν;

No, no. I prefer to keep them on, Mrs. Hall.

Excuse me, sir, I clean forgot to put mustard on your..oh..I didn’t know..

Minimē, sed geram eōs, domina Aula!

Ignōsce, vir, oblīta sum sināpī super...ō...cōnscia nōn eram...

I should explain what I was really too cold and fatigued to do before that I’m an experimental investigator. My reason for coming to Iping was a desire for solitude. I do not wish to be disturbed in my work.

Nōlō in opere sollicitārī.

In addition to my work, an accident necessitates a certain retirement. My eyes are sometimes so weak and painful that I have to shut myself in the dark for hours together. Lock myself up.

Yes sir, I understand, sir!

The next day Mr. Griffin’s luggage, two trunks, a box of books, and a dozen crates filled with objects wrapped in straw arrived from Bramblehurst station.

Edepol intelligō, vir!

Postrīdiē sarcinæ dominī Grȳpis, duæ arcæ, capsa librōrum, corbēs duodecim rēs in strāmentīs tēctās habentēs ā statiōne Cōllis Dūmōsī perveniunt.

Come along with those boxes, Mr. Hall, I’ve been waiting long enough for them. And cart-owner, keep your animal away from me!

Fer hūc corbēs, domine Aule. Etenim sat diū eōs expectō. Tū autem, plaustrārī, arcē bēstiam tuam ā mē!

Suddenly the dog attacked Mr. Griffin’s leg…

Ooo! I.. I’ve got to get to my room!

He wuz bit. I better go see him.

Subitō canis crūs dominī Grȳpis adorītur…

Ō, redeundum est mihi ad cubiculum!

Morsus est. Oportet mē vīsere eum!

Mr. Hall rushed up to Griffin’s room, but before he could figure out what he was looking at, some unseen object hit him in the chest…

Itaque dominus Aulus in cubiculum Grȳpis irruit, prius autem quam intelligeret quid aspicerētur, rēs quædam latēns eum in pectore verberāvit.

Mr. Hall left the scene, puzzled and nursing his bruises, minutes later, Griffin appeared in the doorway of the inn.

I’m sorry about the dog, sir. Was you hurt?

Not a bit. Never broke the skin. Hurry up with those things.

Pænitet mē canis, vir. Momorditne tē?

Minimē, numquam cutem frēgit! Festīnāns fer illa!

Μεταμέλει μοι τοῦ κυνός, ἄνερ. Ἆρα ἔδακέν σε;

Mr. Griffin hurriedly unpacked his crates and speedily went to work. But then..

Dominus Grȳps, corbibus raptim vacuīs factīs, cito incēpit operārī. Tum autem...

I wish you wouldn’t come in without knocking. My investigations… the slightest disturbance, the jar of a door.. I must ask you…

Utinam nōn ineās sine pulsātiōne! Investigātīonēs meæ... minimus strepitus, ostium dissonāns... oportet mē petere ā tē...

I just brought your meal, sir. You may lock the door if you wish.

Tantum attulī tibi cibum, vir. Potes ōstium occlūdere, sī tibi placet.

After Mrs. Hall left, Griffin ate his dinner and diligently went to his work.

Cum Domina Aula discessisset, Grȳps cēnātus studium in opere suō pōnēbat.

I can’t go on… three hundred thousand.. all my life it may take me? Patience? Patience indeed?

Nequeō...trecenta mīlia... Numquid tōtam vītam peragō? Sustineamne? Sustineam vērō!

Meanwhile gossip about the new guest started.

Intereā garriēbat dē novō hospite vulgus.

I tell you, I saw through the tear of his trousers and couldn’t see his skin. You’d have expected a sort of pinky to show, but there wasn’t none.

Vīdī, inquam, per scissūram brācārum ejus, cutem tamen ejus nōn potuī vidēre. Putāssēs
aliquid pūniceum appāritūrum esse, nihil autem appāruit!

My sakes! But his nose is as pink as paint.

As time went on, the gossip continued…

What’s his occupation?

I don’t like it!

He’s a criminal trying to escape justice.

I don’t trust that stranger!

Quōmodo quæstum facit?

Displicet hoc mihi!

Maleficus est quī pœnam effugit!

Nōn crēdō istī hospitī!

Διὰ τίνος ποιεῖται ἐργασίαν;

What’re all those bottles in his room?

Why doesn’t he show himself?

Why does he keep those bandages on?

Quid tantæ lagēnæ in cubiculō ejus?

Cūr nōn sē ostendit?

Cūr gerit illās fasciās?

Τί τοσοῦτοι οἱ λάγῡνοι ἐν τῷ δωματίῳ αὐτοῦ;

Διὰ τί οὐ δείκνυσιν αὑτόν;

Διὰ τί φορεῖ ἐκείνους τοὺς ἐπιδέσμους;

Several months later, Dr. Cuss, the village physician, decided to call on Mr. Griffin to ask for a donation in order to get a nurse for the townspeople.

Multō tempore post, doctor Coxa, medicus vīcānus, dominum Grȳpem convēnit dōnum petēns quō cūrātrīx oppidānōrum ægrōtōrum reperīrētur.

Pardon my intrusion but… YEEOOW!!!

Ten minutes later in the village churchyard…
Veniam mihi dā ingressō...PAPÆ!

Paulō post in vīcī sepulcrētō...

Vicar! Vicar! Am I going mad? I was just up to Mr. Griffin’s room.. and I saw, I saw… No, I must be going mad!

Vicārī! Vicārī! Īnsānusne fīō? Modo in dominī Grȳpis cūbiculō fuī... et vīdī, vīdī… Immō vērō īnsānus fīō!

What is it, Dr. Cuss? What’s happened?

I was in Griffin’s room, asking for a donation, when someone or something nipped at my nose.

Τί τὸ πρᾶγμα, διδάσκαλε; Τί ἐγένετο;

I looked closer at Griffin and he was standing there with… without any arms. It’s very well for you to laugh, but I tell you I was startled!

Ha, ha, ha! It’s really a very remarkable story!

Deinde Grȳpem propius aspexī, illīc stantem s... sine brāchiīs. Tū quidem rīdēs,
ego autem, inquam, horruī!

Ha, ha, ha! Nimia mīra memorās!

A few nights later the vicar and his wife were awakened by a noise and cautiously went to investigate.

Noctibus posteā paucīs, vicārius uxorque ejus strepitū expergēfactī prūdenter īvērunt quæsītum.

He’s found the house money! Two pounds ten. But there’s no one here! Who lit the candle?

Invēnit argentārium! Decem sēstertiōs. Nēmō autem est hīc! Quis accendit lucernam?

Εὕρηκε τὴν ἀργυροθήκην. Δύο δραχμὰς καὶ τριώβολον. Οὐκ ἔστι δ' οὐδεὶς ἐνταῦθα. Τίς ἧψε τὸν λύχνον;

Listen, the sneeze that woke me! There it is again!

Look! The door is opening!

Audī, sternūtāmentum quod expergēfēcit mē! Et iterum sternūtāmentum!

Adspice, ōstium aperītur!

And now it’s closing. But no one went through!

A half hour later, back at the inn.

Et nunc clauditur. Nēmō autem trānsīvit!

Paulō post in dēversōriō.

The bolts on the door are shot back. I know I closed it last night!

Ōstiī pessulī redūctī sunt. Sciō autem mē herī id clausisse!

Mr. Griffin’s door is open, and he’s not in his room, but… but his clothes are there!

Let me see, why you’re right. What’s he doing without his clothes, then? This is a most curious business. Did… did you sneeze?

Fac videam. Enimvērō rēctē dīcis. Quid ergō facit is sine vestīmentīs suīs? Ista rēs mīrābilis est. S... sternuistīne?

Φέρʼ ἴδω. Καὶ γάρ τοι ἀληθῆ λέγεις. Τί οὖν ποιεῖ ἐκεῖνος οὐ φορῶν τὰ αὑτοῦ ῑ̔μάτια; Τοῦτο θαυμαστόν ἐστιν. Ἆρα... ἔπταρες;

Why, no. I thought you did!

Suddenly an amazing thing happened.

Immō vērō tē putābam sternuisse!

Subitō rēs mīra facta est.

Yiii! Spirits! I know it’s spirits! I’ve read about them! Look, everything’s leaping and dancing!

Heu! Dæmonia. Sciō dæmonia hoc facere. Lēgī dē eīs! Ecce, omnia saliunt saltantque!

Οἴ.

Let’s get out of this room, quickly! I’ll get Mr. Wadgers the Blacksmith across the street!

Festīnantēs exeāmus dē cubiculō hōc! Dominum Vindicem ferrārium trāns viam accersam!

Minutes later…

What’s this about furniture and things flying in the air?

Paulō post...

Quid dē vāsīs et aliīs rēbus in āere volantibus?

Τί περὶ τῶν σκευῶν καὶ τῶν ἄλλων ἐν τῷ ᾱ̓έρι πετομένων;

It’s true! All those bottles in his room. He’s put spirits in the furniture. We’ve got to lock him out. Don’t let him in again. I should have known, with them glasses and bandaged head!

Vērum dīcis! Tantæ lagēnæ in cubiculō ejus! Dæmonia in vāsīs posuit!

Several hours later, after Mrs. Hall had gotten over her shocking experience…

Αliquantō post, cum domina Aula perturbātiōnem superāsset...

My good woman, why haven’t you prepared my meals and…

Ō bona mulier, cūr cibum mihi nōn parāstī et...

Don’t good woman me.. want to know what you been doin’ to my chair upstairs..and I want to know how it is your room was empty, and how you got in again. And why hasn’t my bill been paid… and

καὶ

Stop! You don’t understand who I am or what I am. I’ll show you, by Heaven! I’ll show you!

Dēsine! Neque quis sim intelligis nec quid sim! Tibi ostendam, medius fidius! Tibi ostendam!

Mr. Griffin placed his hand to his face and removed a fake nose from his disguise and put it in Mrs. Hall’s Hand.

Dominus Grȳps, manum ad ōs apposuit et nāsum falsum ā vēlāmentō ablātum in manum dominæ Aulæ dēposuit.

OOOW!

Heavens! It can’t be. IT just can’t. He.. He.. Oh, no! No!

Ō!

Hercules! Fierī nōn potest! Omnīnō nōn potest! Ipse...Heu mihi!

Ὤ.

They were prepared for scars, disfigurements, tangible horrors but… nothing!!!

Minutes later..

What.. What’s all this?

Well I’ll be! Mrs. Hall was telling the truth! But head or no head I’m going to arrest him!

Quid...Quid istud? Peream sī domina Aula vērum nōn dīcēbat! Capitātum autem an nōn, comprehendam eum!
