Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp

Post by bedwere »

Although the art of Little Nemo is outstanding, the story of Aladdin is probably more appealing, since it is based on the timeless hero-archetype. The comic version I'll be translating can be found here. The art by Antonio Giolitti is also very good. Thank you for your help in fixing my blunders!

Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp

Permira Aladdinis lucerna

In an ancient city lived a handsome youth named Aladdin. His father had died and his mother washed clothes for a living.

In antiqua urbe habitabat pulcher adolescens Aladdin nomine. Pater ejus mortuus erat, mater autem lintea lavans victum quæritabat.

Aladdin was a good son, helping his mother all he could, but life was hard.

Ha, ha! There goes Aladdin, carrying his mother’s laundry!

Ha, ha! Ecce venit Aladdin, portans illota matris!

As he walked through the marketplace, helping his mother to carry the laundry, he was often jeered at by unkind boys…

One day, a wicked magician saw in Aladdin just the lad he needed, and determined to get to know him.

Who is that boy?

Quis est ille puer?

Τίς ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος ὁ παῖς;

He’s Aladdin! His father was a tailor but he died!

Est Aladdin! Pater ejus erat vestiarius, mortuus autem est.

By bribing some boys in the marketplace with gold coins, the magician learned all about Aladdin and where he lived.

Cum nummos aureos pueris quibusdam largitus esset, magus cognovit omnia de Aladdine habitationemque ejus.

My dear boy! How glad I am to see you!

But, I don’t…

O carissime puer, quam delector videns te.

Sed ego non...

A short time later, the magician came upon Aladdin at the well near his home and ran toward Aladdin, smiling broadly…

You are the picture of my long-lost brother! Tell me, nephew Aladdin, is he well?

My… my father is dead!

Tu quidem es effigies longe perditi fratris mei. Dic mihi, nepos Aladdin, recte valetne?

Pa ... pater mortuus est.

Σύγε εἶ ἡ εἰκὼν τοῦ μακρὸν ἀπεγνωσμένου ἀδελφοῦ μου. Εἰπέ μοι, ἀδελφιδῆ Ἀλαντίν, ἆρα καλῶς ἔχει;

Pretending to be overcome with joy, the magician started to question him about his father. Aladdin was almost speechless.

Simulansque exsultare lætitia, magus interrogabat eum de patre ejus. Aladdin autem modo non stupebat.

Dead! Oh, alas! That I should have come too late to see him alive!

Mortuus! Vah!

When Aladdin told him that his father was dead, the wicked old schemer buried his face in his hands, as though heartbroken.

Cumque Aladdin ei narrasset patrem suum mortuum esse, malus et vetus insidiator, quasi afflictus, obtexit vultum manibus.

But my mother will be glad to see you, sir!

No! No! I feel too sad to meet her now!

And all his efforts to comfort his “uncle” were useless. The magician seemed to be overcome with grief…

I’ll come to supper tonight, Aladdin! But in the meantime, here is a little gift for you!

Oh, thank you...uncle!

Hοdie vesperi, o Aladdin, veniam ad cenam. Interea autem ecce, parvum donum tibi!

O, gratias ago tibi...patrue!

Promising to come to supper that night, the magician put some coins into Aladdin’s hand, and left.

Magus ergo, pollicitus se ad cenam vesperi venturum, nummis nonnullis in Aladdinis manum positis, abiit.

That evening, Aladdin’s mother served the “uncle” a delicious meal of roast duck bought with the money he had given them.

Illa autem vespera, mater Aladdinis apparavit patruo, ut videbatur, cenam suavissimam, nempe anatem assam emptam quo argento iste dederat.

All that evening, the magician praised Aladdin highly, and hinted at a great thing in store for him…

This cloak is a perfect fit, Aladdin!

It is indeed, uncle!

Hoc pallium apte convenit tibi, Aladdin!

Profecto, o patrue.

And as part of his plan the crafty schemer brought forth beautiful clothes for the youth.

A handsome young man you are, nephew! Tomorrow, my dear sister-in-law, I will take Aladdin for a walk!

Pulcher juvenis es, nepos! Cras, o bona glos, ducam Aladdinem ambulatum.

Aladdin’s mother was so proud of her handsome son that she did not question anything the “uncle” said.

Tomorrow morning, early, I will return! Good night, dear nephew!

Cras mane redibo! Bene vale, o bone nepos!

Finally the magician left, promising to return early the next day to take Aladdin to a wonderful surprise he had prepared for him…

The next morning, the magician led Aladdin out into the mountains… The path was rough and wild.

Postridie igitur magus eduxit Aladdinem in montana. Via autem erat aspera et agrestis.

Uncle, haven’t we… walked far enough?

Not yet, my boy!

Patrue, nonne satis longe ambulavimus?

Nondum, o puer!

Θεῖε, οὐχ ἱκανῶς μακρὰν βεβαδίκαμεν;

It took them through a dark forest, where the trees seemed to assume many strange shapes.

This is the place, nephew! A great treasure lies under our feet!

Under our feet? Wh-Where...?

Hic est locus, nepos! Nam magnus thesaurus jacet sub pedibus nostris.

Sub pedibus nostris? Ubi?

Ὑπὸ τοῖς ποσὶν ἡμῶν; Ποῦ;

At last the magician told Aladdin that a wonderful treasure of gold, diamonds, rubies, and emeralds lay underground…

Denique magus dixit Aladdini mirum thesaurum auri et adamantum et carbunculorum et smaragdorum jacere sub terra.

Do as I tell you and you will see.

Following his “uncle’s” instructions, and using all his strength, he pulled up a large bush and a clod of earth with it…

Fac ut dico et videbis.

A stairway!

Of course! Now listen to me!

...leaving a hole big enough to walk into! And at the bottom of the hole were steps leading into what seemed a bottomless pit.

Scalæ!

Prorsus. Ausculta autem me.

Before Aladdin could get over his surprise, his “uncle” told him to go down into the cave below the steps, and bring up a lamp that he would find there.

Antequam Aladdin admirationem excuteret, iste qui patruus putabatur jussit illum descendere in speluncam infra gradus et referre lucernam quam illic repperisset.

Hurry! There’s not much time!

Yes, uncle!

But Aladdin was warned not to let his clothes touch the walls of the cave or he would die.

Propera.

The stone stairway went down and down! It grew darker and darker as Aladdin descended!

Ohhh!

Then at the foot of the stairs, he saw a strange light --- and followed it through a doorway.

Scalæ quidem lapideæ magis magisque deorsum ferebant. Aladdine autem descendente, magis magisque obscurabatur.

O!

Beautiful

Aladdin found himself in a beautiful garden, where every flower was a ruby or an emerald and the fruits hanging on the trees were pearls or precious stones. He stood in astonishment at the wonder of it.

I never saw anything so pretty

He could not help picking a few roses carved from a single ruby and daisies with diamond petals.

Numquam tam lepida vidi.

I’ll take some of these, too!

He picked a little fruit from every tree and stuffed his pockets! All the fruit were gem stones worth a fortune. But Aladdin did not know this.

Aladdin! Bring the lamp!

He was so excited that he almost forgot why he had come. Suddenly, the magician’s voce reminded him.

Aladdin, adfer lucernam!

It isn’t even pretty!

And the end of the garden path stood the lamp on a table, but Aladdin could not see what his “uncle” could want with such a plain little lamp.

Aladdin!

I’m coming, uncle!

But obeying his “uncle”, Aladdin picked up the lamp and started back to the long stairway…

Venio, patrue!

Near the door he saw a fine gold ring on a golden stand. Aladdin was strongly tempted to see if it would fit him!

It’s just made for me! Oh..

Aladdin! You lazy boy! Bring my lamp!

Putting down the lamp, he tried on the ring. Just then, the magician’s voice came down the stairway, very angry

Maxime me decebit! O..

O Aladdin, o piger! Adfer meam lucernam!

Blow out the lamp and hand it to me!

Wait! I can’t

Aladdin hurried to his “uncle’s” bidding, then stopped again as the precious stones began spilling out of his pockets…

Exstinguens lucernam porrige mihi.

Mane.

You stupid boy! Hand that lamp to me at once! Now! Now!

The magician grew furious! He wanted Aladdin to hand him the lamp so he could carry out his plan to seal the youth in the cave.

O stulte puer! Statim porrige mihi istam lucernam! Jam! Jam!

Patience uncle, I’ll come as soon as I can!

But his anger only made Aladdin stubborn. They youth began picking up the gems and told his “uncle” he would have to wait.

Quietus esto, patrue! Quam primum veniam!

Ira quidem patrui solum obdurabat Aladdinem. Qui autem incipiens tollere lapides ait
patruo, ut putabatur, opus esse eum exspectare.

Aladdin’s words so angered the wicked magician that he lost his temper completely. Pulling a magic wand from his robe, he spoke some strange words and the earth closed!

Uncle! I’m shut in! Help!

At first, Aladdin did not quite know what had happened. Then he became terribly frightened.

O patrue, inclusus sum! Succurre!

Primum Aladdin haud plane sciebat quid accidisset. Deinde autem territus est.

I’ll never see my home again!

Thinking of his mother, and the little house where they lived, Aladdin became very sad. A tear dropped onto his lamp.

Νumquam rursus videbo domum meam!

All because of this old lamp! I wish I’d never seen it.

Because he had nothing else to do, Aladdin rubbed the tear spot off the lamp.

Culpanda ista vetusta lucerna! Utinam numquam vidissem eam!

Quoniam nihil aliud ei faciendum erat, Aladdin attrivit lacrimæ maculam a lucerna.

Hello! What do you want, Aladdin?

Who... Who are you?

And suddenly a genie appeared! Aladdin could hardly believe his eyes! At first he thought he was dreaming!

Ave! Quid vis, Aladdin?

Quis... Quis es tu?

Et subito genius apparuit! Aladdin autem ante oculos habens vix sibi persuadebat! Primo enim putabat se somniare!

Χαῖρε. Τί βούλει, Ἀλαντίν;

Τίς... Τίς εἶ σύ;

I am the servant of the lamp in your hand! I will do whatever you wish! G

You will?

But when the genie explained that Aladdin was now his master the youth decided to test him…

Ego sum servus lucernæ in manu tua. Quodcumque velis faciam.

Itane?

Ἄληθες;

All right. Get me out of here!

..with the first that came to his mind! He didn’t think anything would happen, but if he could get out...

Bene. Extrahe me hinc!

..in quo primum sibi in mentem veniret!

BOOM

FRAGOR

All at once, there was thunderclap, and Aladdin found himself standing right where the hole in the ground had been … in broad daylight!

There’s the bush I pulled up!

It was not a dream, after all! Everything was the same, except that there was no hole --- and no magician!

Ecce dumus quem exstirpavi!

If I find that uncle of mine, I’ll tell him something!

Aladdin stuffed the little lamp inside his shirt, and started back to town.. He grew angry at the thought of the way he had been buried alive.

Oh, my son! I hope you did not steal them!

No, I found them, mother!

When he reached home, his mother nearly fainted at the sight of the beautiful stones he had found. She did not believe his story of the underground garden.

O fili, spero te eos non furasse!

Immo inveni, mater!

She tied them up in a cloth and hid them behind a loose brick in the chimney place.

Mother, I’m still hungry!

My son, there is no more food in the house!

Three days later, Aladdin’s mother started to polish the little old brass lamp. As she rubbed it...

Mater, adhuc esurio!

Fili, non amplius adest cibus in domo.

Post autem dies tres, mater Aladdinis poliebat veterem lucernam æneam. Dum vero atterebat eam...

Good morning! What shall I do for you!

...suddenly the smiling genie appeared to her! She gave a squeak of fright, but could not answer him!

Salvete!

Χαίρετε. Τί ὑμῶν χάριν πράξω;

Bring us the very best dinner you can!

Aladdin was not frightened at all, this time. He gave the genie a quick command.

There it is, mother!

BOOM!

There was a thunderclap and suddenly on the table lay a wonderful dinner for two on plates of solid gold.

Ecce, mater!

FRAGOR

Et, facto tonitru, subito super mensa jacebat mirabilis pro duobus cena in auro puro.

Come, mother! It smells good!

The poor lady was too astonished to say a word, at first.

Veni, mater! Suaviter olet!

But, Aladdin! How.. who..?

Then her son explained that the powerful genie always appeared when anyone rubbed the lamp.

Sed o Aladdin, quomodo.. quis..?

Deinde autem filius ejus explicavit fortem genium semper apparere quoties quis atteruerit lucernam.

Ἀλλ' ὦ Ἀλαντίν, πῶς.. τίς..;

These plates are pure gold, Aladdin!

Ummmmhmm!

Aladdin’s mother decided she could sell one of the gold plates for enough money to last them all summer.

Mumu mumu!

Istæ patinæ sunt auri puri, Aladdin!

Mater Aladdinis censuit se posse patinam auream unam tanti vendere ut sufficeret eis ad extremam æstatem.

But Aladdin was more interested in going fishing.

Αladdini autem magis curæ erat piscatum ire.

Ha, ha! Dare you to wade across the brook!

The fish were biting well, when he heard laughing voices behind some tall bushes.

Ha, ha! Provoco vos ad transeundum rivum!

Dum pisces hamo capiebantur, audivit voces ridentium post dumos proceros quosdam.

Oh, oh!

He peeked through the bushes, and saw…

Oh, oh!

Et inspiciens per dumos vidit…

Ὦ, ὦ.

What if someone should see us, princess? Tee-hee!

Who cares?

The king’s young daughter and her friends, wading in the stream for fun; the princess in the lead. Aladdin had never seen anyone as lovely as the princess!

Quid si quis videat nos, regina? Αtat!

Quisnam curat?

Τίνι δὴ μέλει;

Aladdin took good care not to be seen by the girls, but after they had gone away…

He didn’t want to fish any more! With his fishing pole dragging in the dust, he walked slowly home.

...non amplius voluit piscari! Arundinem autem in pulvere trahens, lente domum ambulavit.

Ahhh! (Sigh!) I can’t stand it!

My son! What’s the matter with you?

For the next week, Aladdin mooned around the house, and nothing seemed to please him any more.

Heu, heu! Nequeo tolerare!

Fili, quid pateris?

Per sequentem hebdomadam Aladdin vagabatur circa domum quasi nulla re delectaretur.

Τέκνον, τί πάσχεις;

I won’t feel any better until I do!

Do what, Aladdin?

At last he stood up and smacked a fist against his palm. He had made up his mind to marry the king’s daughter!

Melius mihi non erit donec agam!

Quid, o Aladdin?

Jam vero surgens percussit palmam pugno. Statuerat enim se filiam regis uxorem ducere.

Τί, ὦ Ἀλαντίν;

I’m going to marry the king’s daughter!

What? Have you lost your mind?

When Aladdin told his mother, she nearly fainted! To ask for the king’s daughter was like asking for the moon!

Ducam filiam regis uxorem!

Quid?

Τί δή; Ἆρα φρονεῖς;

Take these jewels, mother.

But Aladdin had a plan. His mother was to take the precious stones from the secret garden and give them to the king.

Accipe gemmas has, mater.

The next day Aladdin’s mother went to the king’s palace, trembling inside! She had argued half the night with Aladdin before she agreed to go.

I wish I hadn’t come!

She stood with the fine people who had come to see the king, and wished she were back home.

Well, my good woman, what is your business?

At last her turn came. In her hands she clutched a jewel box, bought with one of the smallest diamonds.

Ἄγε, ὦ γύναι, τὸ σὸν τί ἐστι πρᾶγμα;

Age, o mulier, tibi quid est negotii?

Jam vero sermo pervenit ad eam. Quæ autem manibus tenebat plenam gemmarum arculam emptam unius minimorum adamantum.

Please, your majesty, a gift.

Ah!

Kneeling before the throne she opened the box

Si tibi libet, domine, donum.

Ah!

Emeralds, diamonds, and rubies! A princely gift!

The king loved precious stones better than anything, except his daughter. And he had never seen such beautiful ones.

Smaragdi, adamantes, carbunculi. Donum sane magnificum!

But you have not told me who send this gift?

My son, Aladdin!

Trembling so that she could hardly speak, Aladdin’s mother explained that her son wanted to marry the princess.

At non indicasti quis misisset donum hoc?

Filius meus, Aladdin!

Μater autem Aladdinis, tremens ut vix loqui posset, narravit filium velle reginam uxorem ducere.

But...that’s impossible!

The king sputtered! He said he did not know Aladdin and besides, his daughter would marry nobody but the richest man in all the world.

At fieri non potest!

Rex vero sonum edens dixit sese quidem nescire Aladdinem, filiam autem nupturam esse nullo nisi omnium ditissimo viro.

Tell your son to prove he is worthy!

Yes, your majesty!

He said that if Aladdin really hoped to marry his daughter, he must send the king forty gold bowls heaped up with diamonds and emeralds and rubies!

Jube filium tuum dignum se præbere!

Hoc ago, rex!

Aitque, si Aladdin revera speraret se filiam ejus uxorem ducturum, ei crateras aureas quadraginta adamantibus smaragdis carbunculis plenissimas ad regem mittendas esse.

Tee, hee, hee! She must be simple!

Aladdin’s mother hurried out of the throne room, followed by the laughter of all the court.

Αtat! Manifestum istam simplicem!

Mother, what happened at the palace?

Aladdin, it is no use!

When she reached home, she told her son of the king’s impossible demand: forty bowls full of precious stones!

Μῆτερ, τί ἐπράχθη ἐν τῇ αὐλῇ;

Oh! Is that all he asked?

But Aladdin was not bothered at all! He grinned at his mother, and picked up the old brass lamp!

Ο! Nihilne aliud rogavit?

Sed Aladdin minime turbabatur. Qui ore distorto ante matrem ridens sustulit veterem lucernam æneam.

Ὦ. Οὐδενὸς ἄλλου γ' ἐδεήθη;

I am here! What are your commands?

Forty golden bowls of jewels! And…

He rubbed it and when the genie appeared Aladdin gave him a long list of orders.

Adsum! Quid præcipis mihi?

Quadraginta crateras aureas lapidum pretiosorum!

Πάρειμι. Τί ἐπιτάσσεις μοι;

Look! What is that procession?

A short time afterward, the king looked out of his palace window and gave a shout of surprise!

Vide!

Ἴδε. Τί ἐκείνη ἡ πόμπη;

What he saw were forty handsome serving men carrying forty big golden bowls, heaped with glittering gems, and marching straight toward his palace.

Har-rumph! From whom do you come?

From our master, Aladdin!

The king hurried to his throne room to receive the forty servants, and their gifts. Never had the king dreamed that there were so many beautiful stones in the world.

[Screans] A quo venistis?

[Χρεμπτόμενος] Παρὰ τίνος ἥκετε;

What word does the king send to my master?

Haw-rumph! I er, ahem!

The king hemmed and hawed. At last he said he would give his daughter to Aladdin in marriage, if the girl herself agreed! He named a day for Aladdin to call on her
.

Quid renuntiem a rege responsum ad meum erum?

[Screans] Ego, ehem!

Rex vero hæsitabat. Tandem ait se filiam Aladdini in matrimonium collocaturum esse, si ipsa consensisset. Diemque statuit ut Aladdin viseret eam.

Τίνα ἀπόκρισιν παρὰ τοῦ βασιλέως ἀπαγγελῶ τῷ δεσπότῃ μου;

The day after tomorrow? Fine! But first..

As soon as the chief servant returned with the king’s promise, Aladdin was delighted!

Perendie? Bene!

I want you to build me a palace, instead of this old shack!

He again called the genie and gave the biggest order of all! He talked for fifteen minutes! The moment he stopped…

Volo te ædificare mihi regiam pro isto vetere tugurio!

Et revocans genium quam maxime jussit. Enimvero diu locutus est! Cum cessasset,

BOOM!

a magnificent palace stood where the old shack had been. The pillars were of gold and silver, and the arched windows were outlined with glittering diamonds.

FRAGOR

magnifica regia stabat loco veteris tugurii.

When the day came that he was to call on the princess, Aladdin was dressed like a prince.

He mounted a splendid white horse, outside his new palace…

Cum dies visendi reginam venisset, Aladdin vestitus erat cultu regio. Deinde, equo albo magnifico extra novam ejus regiam conscenso...

Thanks for posting these.
Do you think it would be interesting/possible for "magically" to be made more explicit by adding something like magia quadam or magica arte?

My son!

He soon reached the palace of the king, where his royal father-in-law-to-be was waiting to greet him

Fili mi!

Brevique pervenit ad aulam regis, ubi ipse futurus socer ejus exspectabat dum salutaret eum.

The princess Amina awaits you in the garden, Aladdin!

In his fine clothes, Aladdin looked more handsome than ever. The king was already feeling proud to have such a son-in-law and a rich one besides!

Princess!

Aladdin!

And when the princess Amina saw him, she knew Aladdin was the prince she had always dreamed about.

Ο regina!

Ο Aladdin!

Within a few days they were married amid great pomp and ceremony.

Your palace is magnificent, Aladdin!

Wait til you see inside!

Regia tua est magnifica, ο Aladdin!

Mane dum videas partem interiorem!

And went to live in the magnificent new palace the genie had built.

For many months Aladdin and his princess lived happily, and had everything they wished for.

Et migraverunt in magnificam novam regiam a genio ædificatam.

I was wondering why you chose to put "οἰκοδομηθέντα" into the accusative case when "τοῖς μεγαλοπρεπέσιν νέοις βασιλείοις" is in the dative. Is this "case attraction" within a relative clause? It seems weird because it a passive participle so I'm not sure why it would need to shift to the accusative case. I'm no expert though.

Arrgh! It can’t be. Aladdin? But it is?!

At last the news of the young prince’s great wealth and popularity reached the wicked old magician! He looked into his crystal ball to see if it were really true!

Ah! Fieri non potest! Aladdin? Re vera?

Αἴ. ᾿Αδύνατον. Ἀλαντίν; Ὄντως;

Bah! Fooey! And to think I showed that boy the lamp!

When he knew it was so, he flew into a terrible rage, for he realized Aladdin had learned the secret of the lamp.

Vah! Ηeu! Me ipsum ostendisse puero lucernam!

Φεῦ.

Then he took ship and sailed to Aladdin’s country.

Deinde in navem ingressus vela dedit ad Aladdinis terram.

Hmmm! He doesn’t carry the lamp with him!

When he reached the city, he disguised himself as a peddler selling lamps and spied upon Aladdin.

explorabat Aladdinem.

Lamps for trade!

Next, he went to Aladdin’s palace, shouting the he would trade new lamps for old ones. In this way he hoped to learn if the wonderful lamp was kept there.

What a silly peddler!

New lamps for old! Have you any to trade?

A servant girl in the palace heard him shouting, and laughed to herself.

Quam stultus caupo!

Novas lucernas pro veteribus! Habesne ut permutes?

Ancilla quædam in regia, cum audivisset eum clamantem, secum ipsa risit.

Νέα λυχνάρια πρὸς παλαιά. Ἆρα ἔχεις καταλλάξῃ;

I'm wondering about abditum for "secret". I can't really explain why but in my mind there is some idea of materiality attached to abditus used as a substantive, kind of like "the secret [place] of the lamp", "the place where the lamp is hidden". This might be completely off though :D

I'm trying to recollect my thoughts about the choice and I think that I liked that idea of materiality that abditum has because you do need to rub the lamp with your own lands. I thought also of occultum, secretum...

PS

I changed my mind and decided for secretum instead.

I’ll just see if he means what he says.

She decided to take him at his word! She knew where there was an old, brass lamp.

Videbo saltem utrum sentiat dicta.

Ideo consilium cepit ut crederet ei! Sciebat enim ubi vetus lucerna ænea quædam posita esset.

The master never uses this old lamp. It hasn’t even been dusted for months

The girl hurried to Aladdin’s bedroom, and took down the lamp from a high shelf. She never dreamed that it held the secret of all Aladdin’s riches.

Erus numquam utitur vetere lucerna ista.

Look, peddler! Will you trade for this?

Ahh! Of course, of course!

But the old peddler, who was really the magician in disguise, knew the lamp very well indeed! He almost snatched it out of her hands.

Vide, caupo! Permutabisne hanc?

A! Scilicet!

Ἴδε, κάπηλε. Ἆρα καταλλάξει τόδε;

I have it! I have it!

The magician did not trade any more lamps that day! He hurried away to be by himself and think of the revenge he would have.

Teneo! Teneo!

And Aladdin, out hunting, a day journey’s from home, had no idea of the ugly surprise waiting for him.

You rubbed the lamp! I am at your command!

Take the palace of Aladdin…

At midnight the magician summoned the genie, and told him to carry Aladdin’s palace and everyone in it to Africa!

Attrivisti lucernam! Sub tuo imperio sum.

Tollens regiam Aladdinis...

Chief courtier! Come here at once!

Early the next morning, the king went to the window for a look at the golden dome of Aladdin’s palace, on the other side of town but he could not find it.

Princeps aulice, statim veni huc!

I think my vision is getting dim! I can’t see Aladdin’s palace.

Neither can I, your majesty!

He could not believe, at first, thet the wonderful new home of his beloved daughter was no longer there.

Suspicor aciem oculorum hebetare! Nequeo enim videre regiam Aladdinis.

Neque ego, ο rex!

Primum quidem non potuit sibi persuadere novam filiæ dilectæ miram domum non amplius illic stare.

It’s Aladdin’s fault! Arrest him!

Yes, your majesty!

When he finally did believe it, he flew into a rage! He said Aladdin must have taken his daughter and the new palace away by magic.

Αladdin culpandus est! Comprehendite eum!

Ηοc agimus, rex!

It’s good to be home again!

Later that day, Aladdin and his hunting companions rode back to town little guessing what had happened.

What! What’s this?

You are under arrest

Suddenly soldiers appeared and seized the bridle of Aladdin’s horse. They told him nothing, except that the king had ordered him taken prisoner.

Quidnam hoc rei est?

Comprehensus es.

Subito autem milites aggredientes habenam ceperunt equi Aladdinis. Cui nullum verbum fecerunt præterquam regem jussisse eum comprehendi.

Τί, τί δὴ τοῦτο;

He was bound and marched into the throne room where the king was waiting for him.

Qui itaque vinctus inductus est in aulam, ubi rex expectabat eum.

Just two questions/remarks:
- would agamus be possible/better than agimus?
- necessario gives me the impression that the sentence reads more like "He said Aladdin was compelled to take his daughter away". Could something like iratus est dicens Aladdinem sine dubio... do the trick? Or maybe using censeo (with or without sine dubio), iratus est censens Aladdinem (sine dubio).../iratus est dicens censendum esse Aladdinem (sine dubio)...?

Your majesty, for what crime am I arrested?

The king was frantic. Thinking Aladdin responsible for the loss of his daughter, he ordered his son-in-law to bring her back…

Ο rex, quid sceleris admisi ut comprehensus sim?

Rex autem furebat. Qui enim arbitrans Aladdinem culpandum quia ipse filia privatus esset, jussit generem referre eam,

Ὦ βασιλεῦ, τί ἀδικήσας συνείλημμαι;

But I do not understand, your majesty…!

...or be thrown into prison. Not knowing what the king was talking about, Aladdin could make no reply.

This is the work of the wicked magician!

But after he had been locked up in prison, his guard told him how the palace had disappeared in the night and the princess with it.

Oh, if there were only something I could do!

That night, Aladdin could not sleep. He felt so unhappy that he twisted his hands together rubbing the ring that he had taken, long ago, from the secret cavern.

Utinam esset quid in mea potestate!

Illa autem nocte Aladdin non potuit dormire. Sic enim mærebat ut, contortis manibus,
fricuerit anulum quem jampridem a secreta spelunca cepisset.

Hello! I am the servant of the ring, at your command!

The, the ring?

As he did so, another genie suddenly stood beside him, ready for orders. For a moment Aladdin did not understand.

Salve! Ego sum servus anuli, sub tuo imperio.

Anuli vero?

Τοῦ δὴ δακτυλίου;

Take me at once to my wife, the princess!

Then he remembered the ring he had taken from the secret garden below the ground. He gave a glad command.

Statim porta me ad uxorem meam, reginam!

Deinde vero memor anuli quem ceperat ab horto secreto subterraneo, læte imperavit.

Amina! My Princess!

Sob! Sob!

No sooner had he spoken than he found himself standing under his palace window, looking up at his princess-wife! She did not see him, because she was weeping, but when he spoke…

Αmina, regina mea!

Oiei!

Ἔ, ἔ.

Aladdin! I thought I would never see you.

I thought so, too!

She looked down with a glad little cry and ran quickly to greet her beloved husband.

Aladdin! Arbitrabar me numquam te visuram!

I will take you away, with the help of my ring.

Shhh! Come in and speak softly!

Aladdin lost no time in climbing up to the window, but Amina warned him to be quiet, lest any of the servants should hear and tell the magician.

Afferam te per anulum!

Tace! Ingressus remitte vocem!

I have only to rub this ring and the genie who serves it will take.

No, Aladdin!

When he had told his story, the princess objected strongly to his plan. She reminded Aladdin that the wicked magician still had the lamp and was powerful enough to spoil everything.

But where is the lamp?

The magician carries it with him!

She said that the magician was away from the palace just now, and they must make plans to get the lamp away from him.

Ubinam est lucerna?

Magus secum fert eam.

Ποῦ ποτέ ἐστι τὸ λυχνάριον;

Ummm! Let me see!

Aladdin thought and thought! He knew that they must take the lamp without the magician knowing it or else the magician would rub the lamp and command the genie.

Ο, agedum!

Hi bedwere,

I took the liberty to have a go this page. Not saying that I am dissatisfied with your translations, of course! I figured I would be less tempted to look at yours if I did it beforehand but there are some places where I struggled ("I have only to...", etc), so I'm looking forward to reading your translation.
- Regina mea, Amina!

- Aladdin! Putavi me nunquam te visuram...
- Et ego quoque!
Laeta voce emissa, oculos demisit celeriterque ad salutandum dilectum maritum cucurrit.

- Anulo juvante, te auferam...
- Shhh! Intra, voce submissa loquere!

- Genius, famulus anuli, auferet, dummodo atteram...
- Minime, Aladdin!
Cum is cuncta narravisset, regina consilium vehementer rejecit.

Edit. It's nice to see how close our translations are sometimes (and it's of course even nicer to see how you've handled to passages where I struggled) :-)
Would you mind if I asked your advice about the use of etiam nunc/etiam tum in the fourth image. I used etiam tum because the narration is in the past tense but I realize now that the speaker's perspective (etiam nunc) might be more important. Do you think both are possible?
The other point is somewhat related: I used auferant instead of auferrent, trying to emulate what is described in A&G 585b, does it make sense to you or is it way off?

No problem, if you don't have time to answer, I realize this is not the purpose of the thread. In the same way, don't hesitate to tell me if me posting a translation is more an annoyance than anything. Also, if (by a rare chance) I happen to have written something that makes sense, feel free to use it in the final version if you wish to.

Very nice!

As for your first question, although I'm just an amateur (so caveat emptor :D), I think that both nunc and tum are possible. Lewis and Short say that regarding nunc and there are no questions about tum.
Regarding the violation of the consecutio temporum you suggest, I think it is very dramatic. Even classical authors did not always follow it. Maybe in imitation of the Greek syntax, where you always put yourself in the speaker's perspective?

I have a question for you though. Where did you find "quiete facere" with the ablative?

Thank you for your comments!

I thought of quiete as an adverb. I don't remember if I found quiete facere somewhere or if I kind of came up with it on the spot (influenced by the English original?). Reading your translation (ut taceret) and rechecking the original, I see that I was probably mistaken in thinking this sentence refered to Aladdin climbing (hence my using facere), while it seems to apply to his having no to talk too loud.

Thank you. I've just realized that Aladdin wasn't really asking to see something, as I thought. I'll change that.

I have it!

Tell me quickly!

All at once the idea came to him! He would go to the nearest town and buy something that would make the wicked magician sleep.

Τeneo.

Age, dic mihi.

Come back after dark, Aladdin. So he won’t see you.

Acting on the sudden idea, Aladdin climbed quickly down from the window.

Nocte redi, Aladdin. Ne videat te.

Aladdin ergo, consilio subito agens, cito descendit de fenestra.

And crept away through the bushes until he was at a safe distance from any of the magician’s servants, who might see him.

Εt serpuit per dumos donec tuto distavit a magi servis, qui visuri eum fuerint.

He found a town, only a few miles away, and went straight to an apothecary’s shop hoping to find what he needed.

Ιnventoque a paucis milibus passibus vico, sperans se quod sibi opus erat inventurum, recta ivit ad tabernam medicinam.

Well, young sir! How can I help you?

I want something that..

To his joy the apothecary said he knew what aladdin must use and agree to make a little of it.

Volo quo...

Medicamentarius autem Aladdinem lætificavit dicens se, scientem quo opus ei esset uti, consentire ad pausillum faciendum.

Μή τί σοί τινα ὄνησιν δύναμαι φέρειν, ὦ νεανία;

You must pay me well! Fifty pieces of gold!

I haven’t got it! But

He took a long time, but at last brought out a tiny bottle, for which he asked a large sum of money.

Εffuse solves mihi! Quinquaginta aureos!

Careo. Tamen...

What are your commands?

Awwk! Where did he come from?

Aladdin rubbed his ring and the genie of the ring appeared.

Quid præcipis mihi?

Vah! Unde venit iste?

Aladdin igitur fricuit anulum, cujus autem genius apparuit.

Τί ἐπιτάσσεις μοι;

Ἔα· πόθεν οὗτος ἐλήλυθεν;

Bring me a purse

At once!

Aladdin ordered a purse with a hundred pieces of gold!

Αffer mihi sacculum!

Hoc ago!

Et Aladdin postulavit sacculum centum aureorum plenum!

Instantly a large leather pouch appeared in mid-air.

Τum autem magna pera suspensa apparuit.

There you are!

Aladdin placed it in the hand of the apothecary, and took the little phial! The apothecary was too surprised to say a word!

Ecce!

Qua in medicamentarii manum tradita, Aladdin lagunculam cepit.

I hope I’ll find Amina alone!

It was well after dark when Aladdin came in sight of the palace! He hoped that the magician had not eaten supper yet.

Utinam incidam in Aminam unam.

Νοcte jam facta, regia apparuit Aladdini. Qui autem sperabat magum nondum cenasse.

Amina, hsst!

He reached the window of the princess’ chambers without being seen, and called to her softly.

Amina, st!

Where is the magician?

Downstairs!

She greeted him eagerly, and told him that the magicians would come upstairs at any minute to have supper with her.

Ubi est magus?

Descendit.

Ποῦ ἐστιν ὁ μάγος;

Luck is with us! Take this!

Aladdin told his wife to put the powder into the magician’s cup of tea when he wasn’t looking. Then, when the wicked magician was asleep, they would get the lamp.

Fortuna nos favet! Accipe!

Princess, is supper ready?

Aladdin, quickly!

They had hardly finished talking when they heard the magician coming. Amina pushed Aladdin into a closet, where he could not be seen.

Regina, estne cena parata?

Aladdin, festina!

Βασίλισσα, ἆρα τὸ δεῖπνον παρεσκεύασται;

Aha! It smells good!

The princess was waiting, with downcast eyes as the magician entered. She had already emptied the powder into one of the cups.

Ah, bene olet!

Et regina expectabat dejectis in terram oculis dum magus introibat. Effuderat enim jam pulverem in pocillum quoddam.

Instead of "Οἱ δὲ μόλις παυσάμενοι."

Perhaps "Οἱ δὲ ὀλίγου δεὶ παυσάμενοι."

I've seen μόλις used in more of a sense of "difficulty finishing" than a "lack of completion" sense.

But maybe there is some semantic shift in koine.

You’re trembling, my dear! But you’ll get over it!

With a shaking hand she handed the magician the cup with the apothecary’s powder in it! She hoped that he would not notice the taste and grow suspicious.

Τremis, amica. Sed superabis!

Et manu tremens tradidit mago pocillum habens medicamentarii pulverem. Sperabat vero illum ne gustando suspicaturum aliquid esse.

Delicious! A flavor quite new to me!

But the old schemer was so pleased with himself that he never dreamed of the princess playing a trick on him…

Quam suave! Etenim nove mihi sapit!

So! You put something in my, my…

...until the powder suddenly began to work! Fighting his sleepiness, the magician pulled the lamp halfway out.

τῷ…

Aladdin, quick!

Guzz!

Then his eyes were shut, and his mouth opened in a long snore.

Aladdin, festina!

Sterto.

Deinde, oculis clausis, ore aperto, lente stertebat.

He is still holding it tight!

Aladdin bent over the magician, but he could not take the lamp without a hard pull! And a hard pull would make the magician’s hand rub the lamp! That would never do, because…
