Quid est usus verbi 'quam' in sententia quae sequitur?

Qui ubi decucurrerunt, eo magis Romanis subita atque improvisa res fuit, quod orta ex lacu nebula campo quam montibus densior sederat.

Anglice pars anterior sententiae, ut puto, dicit:

After they charged, the situation was more sudden and unexpected (to the Romans) because a fog had risen from the lake and settled on the field...

Ut aestimo, pars posterior dicat:

...which had settled thicker in the mountains.

Sed...ea sententia anglica verbo 'quam' non convenire videtur.

It is a comparative quam, going with densior: 'thicker on the field than in the mountains'.
