Stop and Frisk
Alexander Nikolaev's paper Greek Etymology in the 21st century presents a "detailed illustration of methodological and other flaws of [Beekes' Etymological Dictionary of Greek]."
“One might get one’s Greek from the very lips of Homer and Plato." "In which case they would certainly plough you for the Little-go. The German scholars have improved Greek so much.”

I'm not a fan of the site, but lots of people use it to share papers. It's free. Try scrolling down on the page.

Thanks for this. So, do the defects listed outweigh its usefulness otherwise?jeidsath wrote: ↑Tue Jul 02, 2019 4:39 pm Alexander Nikolaev's paper Greek Etymology in the 21st century presents a "detailed illustration of methodological and other flaws of [Beekes' Etymological Dictionary of Greek]."

Re: Stop and Frisk
Great heading, Joel, and great posting. Nikolaev (Sasha to his friends and colleagues) has literary interests and has done trailblazing and challenging work on the Homeric dialect among other things. He’s worth following. (He’s currently at BU, but will no doubt end up at Harvard or UCLA.)

Is Frisk considered reliable?
At the workshop I was surprised that the organizer, Stephen Hill, didn't seem to know Frisk.
