Your school classes.
Well it's that time of year again and summer is over (for me at least). I just had my first day of school (I'm in 11th grade now), which overall was pretty good. It's kind of a relief to get back to a schedule (yeah, I'm odd) rather than just lazing around the house. I like all of my teachers except for the PE teacher who seems a little dim-witted and talks like Boomhower off of King of the Hill. So my question to you is: What classes are you taking this year if you are in high school? If in college, what classes are you taking this semester? If you're out of school talk about what kinds of classes you took during school. Also, what things do you plan on doing in your free time. My apologies if this topic has already been done, I haven't been here very long.
My classes are:
1. Algebra II Pre AP
2. AP European History
3. PE
4. Spanish II Pre AP
5. AP American History
6. AP English (11th grade)
7. Debate II
In my free time I'll be learning Latin and Ancient Greek and I'll probably join some clubs.

Hey, good topic, your classes sound much more interesting than my highschool ones! Is it just me or are you starting back earlier than most schools? My first day of class is Sept 13th, the highschools and elementary schools head back a week earlier though.
I'm going into 2nd year of univ and first semester I have:
Latin
Medieval History
Irish History pre-1848
American History: 1776-1865
and Greek Civ
2nd semester the Irish History is replaced with History of Terrorism (should get some lively debates in that one!) and then Greek Civ is replaced with a Roman Civ course.
I'm quite excited to get back to school myself!
On my free time I plan on taking full advantage of the excellent library system and inter-library loan privileges. I also love to bike down by the waterfront (they have good trails) and will hopefully be watching NHL games.

I'm in college, taking:
Physics 1 3 units
Chemistry 51 (Introductory) 3 units
Math 27 (Pre-Calculus) 5 units
Sociology 1 3 units
It's my most difficult semester yet, but well within reason. My only regret is that I won't be taking Latin this semester . I'm going to try to squeeze in Homeric Greek and a bazillion other extracurricular activities as well.

In college I did a BA in theology which included a lot of bible/theology as well as psych, philosophy, history, worldviews, etc. It was a lot of fun.
Now I just work full time but I would like to start working on an MA in youth and family counseling. I hope to start with a single class in november, and just do one at a time so that I can keep working while I'm at it. It will take a LONG time to get a degree that way... but it's something. And I won't have to take out any more loans that way. :)

He studies classics and is pretty much the best in the country.
What are all these AP semester USC like sooo tough semester. What is a 'unit'? Ready? ok. Go bunch of NUTS. Does that count as a cheer?
Next year...school, I will deny its existence until it starts then never go anyway. It worked last year.

My attending a secondary school in England means I return to school on the 6th of September. I think they'll present with me a list of extracurricular activities, mainly sport (which I'll turn down almost immediately). I should be studying Latin as an extra-curricular activity. Apart from that, it's my SATS snd I should pass with level 8+ (I'll be so crushed and angry if I don't).
So it's constant revision, well, nearly.

I don't know how many semesters I've been in school. I will have to consult my transcript to count. I have B.S. degrees in genetics and organismal biology and a minor in chemistry.
Now I am pursuing a classics degree part-time while I work full-time in the lab.
This semester I am enrolled in the following:
-Roman Military History
-Introductory Latin (auditing since I took this 2 years ago but with a different book)
-Intermediate German Composition
As far as my free time goes, I enjoy reading, gardening, origami, and sewing modern quilts.
Good luck to everyone taking classes!

Aurelia, you're lucky that you get to take Physics. Our school has Pre AP Physics and AP Physics (2 class block). To take the Pre AP you have to have Algebra II and I'm in that right now so I couldnt' take it. I'm just going straight into AP Physics next year. I wish I would of taken Latin, but I guess Spanish will be useful.

I haven't been outside since I walked home from school last june. my joints are enlarged, my skin is turning orange and my hair is falling out....
(h.s. sophomore)
AP biology
AP world history
latin III (if I pass my final....)
spanish III hon.
geometry hon. (forced)
english hon.
semester: "foundations of Art"
In my free time I will read, work on karate, get a weekend job, continue esperanto (funny how it's taking as long as a normal language), think about exercising, spend time with friends and waste the rest. If the Pharr's Homeric Greek group ever gets going I'm totally in. Oh right and our Latin program is sort of messed up (no official AP prep. but everyone takes Vergil anyway) so I'm going to keep goin' on Catullus! maybe in senior year I'll try the AP
first day: sept. 9

For math, we have to take Alg. I, Geometry, then Alg. II. Physics is a science course. It was either that or chemistry. I'm really good at math so I chose Physics. Geometry last year was SUPER easy.Aurelia, you're lucky that you get to take Physics. Our school has Pre AP Physics and AP Physics (2 class block). AP is "Advanced Placement". Supposedly college-level courses. I like em because after taking an AP course, one is hopefully prepared for the corresponding AP exam, which, if passed, can earn college credit and save money.
AB is actually kind of confusing at my school. I dunno why they just don't use numbers...
Calculus AB is the first of two Calculus courses (Calculus AB and Calculus BC). Why not Calculus I and Calculus II? I dunno.
Computer Science AB, however, is the second of two Computer Science courses (Computer Science A and Computer Science AB). Again, why not Computer Science I and Computer Science II? I dunno.

Ah ok, I'm still a bit confused but thanks all the same. I'm not too sure what you mean when you talk about it saving money, do you have to pay per course you take at uni in the US? That seems a bit odd to me...AP is "Advanced Placement". Supposedly college-level courses. In the US at most Universities I know of you pay by the class-hour. Most classes are 3 hours. Beginning foreign languages, and sciences and with lab sessions, generally are 4-6. Beginning higher maths may have a similar spread, but for smaller discussion sections rather than labs.
Is it a flat fee per semester elsewhere?

Well in Germany all state universties are free (and there are hardly and private ones worth mentioning) so no fees what so ever. In England there is a flat fee per year, which is £1,125 (ca. 1670 € or 2053.68 $) for all undergraduate courses in England right now. That is going to change in 2006 though, so each university will be able to charge up to £3,000 per year, but no more. I think I can come up with the fees for my course, but my sister will have to pay the highter rate (I'm toying with the idea of applying to a Scottish uni, their unis are all free, but everyone wants to study there so it's harder to get a good place).
I just assumed that the US was similar to England except that US unis charge more per year and that there is no limit to what they can charge - I never knew that they charged per class hour!

Any university in the EU that is free is free for anyone who has EU citizenship or has lived in an EU country for a certain amount of years. Same goes for the tuition fees in the UK, they are the same for every EU citizen, whether you are from Estonia, Germany, England or Slovenia.
If you are from abroad though... well international rates apply in the UK, that means you pay more like £10,000 a year. Not so funny...
Germany universities as I already said are free, and they are free for international students too, I have no idea if all free universities in the EU are free for international students too or if this is only the German universities.
Edit: Swedish ones are free for everyone too, even non-EU students

I see there's quite a few physics students on Textkit. Perhaps we need a physics board to discus that which is the basis of all things?
After all, the Ancient Greeks would have loved modern physics. (The Romans would have been indifferent to it, until they found out from the Greeks about nuclear weapons.)
Also, I notice that most physics students here are first years... Perhaps I could be the one answering the questions, for once.

Universities in continental Europe are (basically) free for anybody. Myself, I am a Canadian and have been studying in Switzerland for four years now, at a flat cost of US$600 per year. It would have been even cheaper had I gone to France, Spain, or Italy. Not to mention that I'm allowed to work part time, and full time during holidays, which at Swiss salaries is pretty cool.
In fact, I plan on going to law school next year, but will be applying to a series of special programs at the university of Paris. Paying French fees (400 euros per year) for all four years, I should (touch wood) come out with both a French "Maitrise", and either a British Law degree (two years exchange in London) or an American J.D. (two years in New York or Connecticut).
Sure as hell beats US$30'000 per year!

Good law schools in the U.S. cost around $30'000 per year (at least for foreigners). I don't really know if they are private or public, but I think a mixture of both.
But from what I understand most Americans leave law school (or university in general) severely in debt, which is something rather rare here in Continental Europe.

I want to go to Italy too! I plan to either move there (or England) for a few months after I graduate then go to college (don't know where yet) and study archaeology, classics, and/or zoology OR go to Italy or Greece on the next "Summer Detention" aka Latin class trip.

It would be hard to go to Italy without any knowledge of the language expecting to learn to speak fluently within a few months. Realistically, even if when you're there you pick up a grammar or course, it will take a couple of years. Still, being surrounded by it can only help, though Italians speak really quickly

Oh, if you're studying there it won't take you long to pick up Italian. A student came to visit my school from Australia for half a year. She'd nearly forgotton all her English after that half year! Her German is good now, and she came to Germany not speaking a word of German. She did have some German lessons in Germany though, but she probably learned most just by using the language.
